Personally didn't need mask since my char was mage and passed the arcane check the very first time. Regardless, it should be passable whatever method was used on the lair's door, unless devs messed something up. Which wouldn't be that surprising considering amount of buggy quest progressions.
I found the door you mentioned and was looking for the answer, the mask is the answer and u get to the hags lair so nothing interesting for me to see there anymore just another way into the underdark for the next playthrough
(one side from the hag's lair and the other side from the underdark's ledge with mushrooms thing)
There are indeed other ways to open the hag door with magic and even if you've failed at dialogues.
I know exactly what you are talking about. It starts near the Arcane Tower in the Underdark. There are a bunch of mushrooms along the wall you can jump up but many are illusory. The first circle you find in the underdark is below the highest one to the right I believe. That take you to the top of where jumping on the mushrooms would bring you. Then another moves you to another locations, and then you find yourself at the one with two animal/beast skulls and two human skulls set up like an altar. We are still in the Underdark by the way, and the map puts use directly over the Grymforge. Then you see an illusion covering a wall. You walk through that and are now in another small circular area. This one does indeed bring you to the Hag's Lair/Overgrown tunnel. The face door is solid when you try to walk through it...unless you put a whispering mask on. I happened to keep a couple bc it says it gives you true site, and apparently it does reveal, at least in this case, the door as an illusion and allows us to pass into her decrepit workshop or whatever. Then from there you can take one to the Putrid Bog right outside her house. Wow, that was one trippy mission to execute Duergars.
Tbh, I was hoping for some crazy new discovery, but nope, just a trip back to the mainland. It sure was exhilarating though. Man, the way you can get around in this game is absolutely nuts. Apparently there is one in the Druid Grove that links to these somehow too, but I have never found it. From what I understand, to use them to get to places in the Underdark you need to find the hidden ones in the Underdark first. Or at least it appears that way as there is very little written about these, and what is written is very...unspecific. The only reason I could answer the question with so much detail is I was literally doing it when I read your post bc I was trying to figure out if I missed something. Lol, there has to be more to these things, or there was supposed to be and it was one of those loose ends they just left in half finished because they were still pretty cool and didn't mess anything up. My goodness. Imagine if you were all beat up from the Duergar fights, then fell off a Mushroom taking 35 points of damage, had not killed the Hag yet but did have a mask (idk, maybe you bailed on the fight bc you were too low a level or picked up a mask somewhere else. I forget where I got these two but it was not from the Hag as those are in my traveler's chest back at camp. Anyway, you're all beat up, haven't long rested and you walk into a all to happy to see you Hag. "Don't worry Petal, Auntie Ethal will patch you up just fine..."
I walked back into the mushroom circle and was transported back to the underdark. You definitely do NOT need any masks to move through this circle - I just did it.
