Raphael's Enemy question (spoilers)

Can some one explain to me why Raphael seemed to be so scared and riled up by his enemy? Why was he trying to keep us from meeting him and saying things like we will release him if we go in the temple. The guy seemed stuck in the temple and i don't see how any of our actions could have been the reason he would become free. i manged to get him to kill himself. Was there an actual option that lead to him being free? the only option i could see that being the case is a persuasion check i had as a ranger to said i was really good at tracking so he should let me go and find the reason he is still stuck. if i would have killed those undead Dark Justiciars in the Silent library would that have freed him? i feel like they wouldn't count because they are already dead which was the excuse he give to why Balthazar is not the one he needs to kill. It really seemed like Rapheal had won the game and was in control and i can't see why he seemed so scared of this guy.
