The only think Wizard lacks is the survivability, shapeshift allows you to soak some damage, but at the same time you can't really spellcast...so its kind of, if it fits your playstyle, sure go for it.
Spider Form lets you spam Web every turn with no spell slot cost and no Concentration needed. Enemies that fail their save are easy targets for the rest of your party, and the webs can be set on fire if needed.
Owlbear form at 6 is strong enough to hold its own in a straight up fight and comes with its own suite of AoE and control abilities.
There is suposed to be some gloves that make druid attacks into unarmed attacks i heared but didnt find it.
The bear form is like an extra 80hp since I can cast it twice per fight/short rest/whatever.
People ♥♥♥♥ on the Druid, especially the shape shifters, but even outside of shapeshift they have some decent skills to balance it.
When things get dicey, transform. Later on you can transform into strong elementals and an owlbear.
You're also not limited to clothes, like mages, and can get very decent AC with the right medium armor. My character has 22 AC, 24 with haste, and 29 with haste + shield.
This is actually the class I'm using for my Lone-Wolf run, and it's killing everything.
Druid is on the weaker side though, but people confuse relative weakness with being bad, and they're not really the same thing.
