They also supposedly have the means to get a Moon Lantern as far as I recall, which is needed in the Shadowlands to be able to continue.
So you should "care" about them in that they are a major character you can use to progress and gain the trust of those in Grymforge, but I ended up freeing and then immediately killing him. I had to find another way, sadly, but you could also presumably be buddy buddy.
So Sovereign Glut is where you’re supposed to learn about Nere?
Glut asks to accompany you to kill the invaders(ones in the underdark beach area), you can do it with or without him(and take him there later to show him) at that point he asks you to kill the other sovereign so his can take over.
In my play i went against him and helped the other sovereign who then gave the quest for Nere and i'm assuming if you help glut he will give it after you take out the original colony of myco's.
Glut is notthe sovereign that want you to kill nere.
The Sovereign want you to:
1. Kill the Duergar in the Beach
2. Specifically bring "Nere's Head".
Which, spoiler alert,is a total waste of time, as you get the same ending if you infiltrate or not, and the exact same quests, in the exact same locations.
SPOILER:
There's a dialogue option to cause a fight while siding with Nere (and he will kill one of his Lt in the process)... this starts a huge war (w/ gnomes) in the main chamber next to the rock fall. I had to play it several times to figure out who was fighting who, because there's a lot of mind-casting that's causing NPCs to switch sides. The point is, start the battle, but stay clear of the fight. Let them pick each other off, then clean up the remainder. There's a little side room that's mostly protected, I took the high ground archers above that, then just waited for any survivors to find me. I did use the ogre horn, and they added to the hilarity and confusion of the situation. One of the Ogres managed to do some weird WWF wrestling move ("knee" toss or something?) , and throw Nere into the lava for me. Luckily his body was close enough to the edge I could loot and still get his head without getting burned. Probably the best fight I've had in the game thus far....
... about the gnome's involvement, I found out their role after the fact, and that there was a injured gnome female laying down next to the Sovereign, where you can get a quest to rescue her gnome friends that end up in the fight with Nere. Since she was hard to see when I first was talking to the shroom before heading to find Nere, I talked to her after the fact and informed her Nere killed them all. I really didn't care about rescuing gnomes, they're all fodder in the giant Nere fight anyways lol.
