Books and notes. Sell or keep?
Hello everyone. is there a reason to keep notes and book we have read already or just sell it all? I have gotten to a point now that it is weighing tons now because of how many books and notes I have picked up along the way.

there are some (very few) books/notes that are quest related that you ought to keep (they're outlined in orange in your inventory). the rest you can just "send to camp" if you're not 100% sure and don't want to just drop them somewhere at random. they'll be in your storage chest at your camp.

So only orange notes and books will be quest related? All white books and notes just sell?

Not exactly. Once you read them you can safely sell the white notes/books. There are white notes and books that unlock quests or insight into other quests you're currently doing.

As a rule of thumb "read" every book/note(i.e. open them, close them and then junk 'em).

The orange notes/books you need to keep for quests. For example early in you can get an orange note/treasure hunt which implies you need to find a treasure and return it and the note back to the person in Baldur's Gate.

Books are usually not relevant to keep if they're not orange from what I've seen (I'm an item hoarder). Some of the notes, especially lost or unsent letters do unlock some dialogue options without being outlined in orange. They're just for extra lore though and don't seem to affect much.

I held on to every note and one copy of every book all the way through the end of Act 2. . .Never found a use for anyone of them.

Ending up selling them.

Still holding to the Illithid stuff from the Nautiloid though.

Yea that is what I was afraid of. that some of those unsent letter etc. will provide some extra stuff since we might meet some of the npc later that those lost or unsent letter was intended for.

I am also an item hoarder haha. I also went for bard on my first playthrough so my str is low and weight capacity therefore also low. I usually let my fighter carry most gear loot to sell while adventuring but books and notes stayed with me.

But maybe I might end up just selling since it is getting annoying to keep managing them haha.

just make sure you read every book helps with lore checks

I just had a backpack in my inventory which I dropped all "important" stuff in. including a pouch which contained all letters. Letters are only 0.05 in weight so it's not that bad.

I'm more miffed about the rope I was lumbering around which ended up not having any use, haha

Thanks everyone. :) Really enjoying the game even though I am a bit slow. Still in act 1 about to enter moonrise tower.. Will probably do 1-2 more characters after this playthrough.

You just gotta roleplay harder. My dude keeps books because he's a nerd.

Making a mental note to ditch that rope... it sounded useful at the time.

So I think there are some nonquest related dialogue scenes you can get with some of the notes, journals, and trinkets you find that you can unlock in Act 3 (most of.the stuff that you find which talk about location point to BG anyways). It's just a theory, but what makes me believe this is that (spoiler alert!) I found Mol's contract with Raphael and was able to talk to her about that after dealing with him.

Additionally, after selling some of those letters, I've run into NPCs with the same name (e.g., a love letter on a corpse addressed to the bard Quill who runs the music shop in BG in Act 3). I might be able to find the letter and buy it back. So if I can, I will try to bring it to him and see if there is a dialogue I can unlock or not.

I sold everything that wasn't orange? Didn't seem to matter.

Read and sell.

There is one book/note necessary to have in your inventory a 30exp event. In the Underdark, the note you find in the Arcane Tower allows you to put autumn crocas on the Doggy Grave I was only able to do that with the note in my inventory.
