So, what exactly counts as Chapter 2?

No, you can go to mountain pass before you enter chapter 2. In fact you probably should because if you go to act 2 before you do, you'll miss out on some quests. I don't know what's in the elevator though since I haven't been there.

I got the message, you should do quests before you move on. I got that message when i wanted to use the elevator and when i wanted to use the mountain pass next to where the gith patrol was.

There is a point where you can still go to Act 1 and the mountain pass while in Act 2. But you do eventually lose the ability to return to the previous zones.
Act 2 is the zone filled with the death curse fog.

I'm pretty sure the mountain pass itself is also act 2.

Playing as Gale Elminister came to visit me if I entered the pass or took the elevator. And that feels like a beginning of act 2 event

I got the "Enter Act 2" achievement when I used the elevator in the underdark which brings you to the shadow cursed lands and moonrise.
But before I took the elevator I visited the mountain pass and didn't get the achievement so in my opinion the mountain pass is still part of Act 1 and when you arrive in the shadow cursed lands by travelling through the mountain pass or the underdark/grymforge then act 2 begins.

which specific elevator (there's more than one in the world)?

FYI you can go via the UD > GF > "Shadowed Lands" and still go back and do the Mountain Pass from there. Once you've *finished* Act 2 and move on to Act 3, you can no longer backtrack to the A1&2 areas.

Getting to Shadow Cursed Lands is Act 2. You can get there from Mountains or Underdark

correct, but alot of people think they have to choose one or the other - you can do both

I personally wouldn't even count the game in "acts". There seems to be exactly 2 breakpoints in the whole game which are also extremely close:
- killing / saving Nightsong in Thorm Crypt closes off underdark / crash site map
- going to Baldurs Gate closes off Shadowlands

Felt kind of strange tbh. I would have throught the developer would close off the crash site map after going through the mountain pass / grimforge elevator but it seems because of rushed development they had to let it open, otherwise you wouldn't even had access to any trader for some time.

Act 2 is shadow cursed lands
Act 3 is Baldurs Gate

I dont think so. I only got the achievement, after leaving the mountain pass area and entering the cursed land.

I went the under dark route but made my way through the shadowlands to the mountain pass and then did my interaction with laezels people. So you can still do both

Hmm ok. Guess pass is just like 1.5 hehe
