Videogame based on D&D vs. video-gamification of D&D
Just trying to start a conversation about the topic, that it feels kinda depressing to me that a lot of players who started playing are seemingly against the idea of actual role playing.

You would think a role play game which has actual role play elements, rather than the pseudo stuff you get from JRPGs, should be a delightful change from nowadays "mainstream" idea of what an RPG should look and feel like.

But seeing so many threads about "stealing is not easy", "people being afraid of undead is unrealistic", "events to run out when you wait too long is uncool", "NPC should not be mad at you when you treat them badly" etc. is - from my personal point of view - offputting,

Sure, it is a video game, and there are many conveniences I do not want to miss, like the lack of need to check all proficiencies etc. before making your roll - the game just serves it all for you ready to roll.

But some complaints... it would not even cross my mind in role playing.
I might even not want to complain but rather praise the developers and game design, if it is something as memorable as in Baldur's Gate 2 - where I accidently casted a spell in the city and totally forgot about the law. Such things are awesome, compared to NPCs who would not care if you carry all their furniture on your way out after breakling all the vases.

What is your opinion on the matter? Should we not have games with more role play? Is it too much already in Baldur's Gate 3? Now I start longing for a proper Roll20/Foundry session...

Much like most problems with the TTRPG, it boils down to player agency. Friction comes when the player wants to do one thing. Attempts to do that one thing. But the game makes them do something else entirely.

People are playing the game because it's popular. That's it. Many people want to be apart of what's trending even if they don't really like it. So you're going to get a wide audience of players. Lots of people don't like to role play. They see a game not as an adventure or a story, or a living world, but as something to be won. You're never going to reach these type of people. They're not wired that way.

If any thread deserves an award, whether you agree or not, it's stuff like this. And yes I've had the same thoughts many times, OP. I could just say a lot of the same things, but maybe you'll be interested in this:

It's kinda difficult to implement the kind of open-ended role-play expected in D&D into a video game. You basically need a human DM for that. D&D in video game format is like playing with a DM who railroads you every step of the way and only gives you a limited number of actions you can take at any given moment.

BG3 does a good job of porting the mechanics of D&D to a video game, but it had no hope of ever porting over the experience for technical reasons.

I guess for me, since I played tabletop D&D for 12+ years, it's hard for me to feel like I'm roleplaying in a video game. Even in BG3, I only get a choice of 5 dialogue options, which is just a limitation of the medium.

During tabletop sessions, you have to dynamically think of your spoken dialogue with your team members based on your character's origin, how you wanted to play the personality, etc. It was more akin to improv acting, and really let's you get into the RP aspect.

Whereas, in a video game, we are limited to dialogue options and character loadouts.

So, not knocking it if you like it, but for me, I can't get into it like I did with tabletop. It's like having a fine steak and then eating fastfood. You can taste the difference, you know?
