warlock patrons and interactivity?

Hi all,

I've read on the internet that warlocks (Outside of Wyll) have interactions with their patrons.
To the Warlock players, is this just fancy dialogue checks or do you actually interact with a Fiend/Fey or Cthulhu?

I didn't finish the game, but I'm near the end of Act2 (out of 3) and so far all interactions were text-based. I could ask (in dialogues) my patron to lend their strength or shield me and then the narrator would voice the outcome. Sometimes they don't answer, sometimes they do, sometimes it depends on a check.
