Game breaking bug, killed Oliver (Spoilers)
I've met Oliver pretty early on in act 2, played with him, thought he was dangerous and killed him. Now I'm doing the "lift the curse" quest and Halsin told me he's half of the land's spirit, and that he couldn't die.

That's cool, we returned to his house and he ran away through a portal. We chased after him, fought Mommy and Daddy plus a dozen of clones until his shield was destroyed, but he never gave up?

The fight kept going so I was forced to kill him again. Now he's nowhere to be found and Halsin says nothing about it.

Hey guys, so I found the solution to this. Not sure if any of you still need it.

I got also bugged out cause I won both rounds on the hide and seek. I attacked Oliver 1 time (attack that doesn't kill him, cause when I 1-shot him, he just vanished.) after I attacked him, it prompted a dialogue saying something like: "No, stop it! Enough!" Then he opens up the portal and hides---- continuing the proper quest line which is the one where you have to break the dome to progress the quest line. Hope that helps y'all!
If you accidentally kill him earlier in the act, just use faerie fire in the area and he will reappear.

So, I managed to do this, won h&s twice, followed him through the portal and got the shield down.

I then went immediately into dialogue and convinced him to join with Thanial. Got a cinematic where he 'dissolved' and Halsin said well done , the shadow will be cleared.

Only for the cinematic to end and all my characters died due to the shadow fog - couldn't even get time to have potions and escape back through the portal..... :steamfacepalm:
So i had the same problem - the little brat doesn't stop summoning. Then i've spent 5 min reading this discussion and realized one thing - everything that doesn't let him speak bugs the quest. I didn't use silence, so there had to be something else. And then i got it! Both times when it bugged Halsin was using his animal form. You can't talk to a druid while he is in animal form. Druid has to temporary go back to his original form to talk. So i did this fight without using Animal Form and it fixed the problem!

Great find! I may have been using wild shape with Halsin at least one of the three times he refused to talk to me, so this could definitely be it.

Still, I feel like this is a massive oversight from the devs considering druids usually revert to human shape whenever someone talks to them.

Ofc it's an oversight if not a game-breaking bug. Let's hope Larian will fix this. Divinity Original Sin 2 also had such problems. Almost all of them got fixed.
It broke in my game as well. I killed him ages ago, had the fight to free half the boy and talked to halsin right after to tell him that Oliver died. I proceeded going to his house and Oliver was standing where I killed him but unresponsive. I couldn't click on him, not talk to him etc. But I figured out that I was able to attach him and that triggered the scene for me.
So is there a way to fix the quest if you killed the shadow boy?
My Halsing was in animal form too and the brat refused to talk to me.
Now Halsing in my camp, no option to say "I killed the boy". Also it doesn't seem he appreared in the location where we were playing hide and seek.
In order for Oliver to talk to you all effects, spells, any harmful status etc... need to be terminated. If you have any ongoing spells, effects, or harmful status, for some reason, it prevents him from starting the dialogue. If you terminate all persistent phenomena he will initiate the expect dialogue.

I killed Oliver, too. It happened at the very beginning of the second act. He seemed to me a dangerous undead. Now, according to the plot, I need to go to the third act, but this quest has not been completed. I can't tell the druid that Oliver was killed either - there is no such line in the dialogue.

Many are looking for an answer to this question. It looks like this is the revenge of the developers for those who kill children in games)
I have kinda fixed the quest.
I killed the boy with Halsing in animal form and the shadow boy disappeared. Halsing gave no additional dialog options so there was no way of progressing.
I finished all other quests, handled Ketheric and in the end, when you stay with Halsing in the hall of tower he finally gives you a new dialog option. I picked those options, with no particular order, just clicked on everything boy-related.
At this moment you can get him back into party, move to portal (there will be no shadow boy), traverse thru the portal and for me this was the moment when dialog with the boy kicked in again.

I had the same problem but I reloaded my save before this mission once you get that mission again don’t play hide and seek. Just tell him right away who he is and then you will have to fight him again. Once you defeat all of his friends. That dialogue of him not wanting to go back will finally pop up and then you can convince him to go back to his true body. Ugh it freaking forever to fix this bug. After you are done with that save it immediately!!!
HONOUR MODE COMPLICATIONS TO THIS ISSUE:
Having the "unending summons" problem in this fight, except I'm playing in Honour Mode -- no save reloading for me. Here's the order of events that got me here:

- Did the the Defend the Portal fight to open up this quest
- Went and met Oliver for the FIRST TIME at the house
- Played tag twice (won first round, lost 2nd round, then followed into the portal-- so far, so good)
- Fight went normally until, being impatient, I attacked the dome directly to finish it off (instead of killing the last few shadows) and the damage reflection killed my main character, plus Halsin was in animal form. I don't know if one of both of us has to be able to initiate dialogue, but I can at least confirm that neither of us could, when the dome went down.
- Unending summons continue, until I realize nothing went wrong and decide to try killing Oliver/Thaniel
- Talked to Halsin while we were still in the area and picked the dialogue option to tell him Oliver/Thaniel is dead, at which point Oliver/Thaniel respawned EXACTLY where he had been before in the fight (not at the house-- which leads me to believe he goes back to wherever he was last)
- When Oliver/Thaniel respawned he was still in a hostile state and so the fight started back up again without any opportunity for dialogue.

IDEAS:
- Maybe if I can end a turn with Halsin/my MC next to Oliver/Thaniel while Halsin is able to speak, it will initiate dialogue to wrap up the fight as normal?
- If that doesn't work, I can hopefully at least kill him and end the fight and give up. Permadeath of this nonsense fight in Honour Mode isn't worth it, I wasn't even planning on using Halsin lol

NEXT:
I have a family holiday thing to go to so I had to leave things here, but I will try some more testing and report back if I can figure out how to get this quest to resume without save reloading

It's kind of insane they still haven't fixed this issue, but from my experience with the bug, Halsin cannot be in wild shape whenever the dome goes down. I am not sure if your character needs to be alive, cause mine never died during the fight (it was one of the last few things I did in act 2 so I was fairly overleveled)

The wild shape thing is complete nonsense because it's the only instance in the entire game as far as I can tell where the druids don't revert to human form and dialogue starts automatically, so we only figured it out by exhaustive trial and error lol
