If you are going to play monk, and you have other melee in your group, this is probably the better monk subclass to use, as the ability to reliably and easily knock stuff down will make your other melee characters better.
Otherwise, it performs similarly to other monk classes, and can be drastically improved by the addition of, say, a level or 3 of barbarian or fighter (barbarian monk is my fav melee right now)
And once you reach mid game elixir of giant is plentiful so you could add some dex to your chara for AC
