Fighter/Bard multiclass; Viable?
Back in the good olde 3.5 days my favourite PC was a CN fighter/bard called Splendid Rex. Our tabletop group stuck with 3.5 through the great cataclysm of 4th edition and never looked back.

So as a Pathfinder 2e dude I was wondering how viable Splendid Rex would be in 5e / BG3?

if you only use bard spell slots for buffs I guess it is. But fighters get a big power spike at level 5 with the second attack, the game can be beaten anyway, but you might feel as other party members are doing more than you if you multiclass before than.

Can you show me your 3.5e character sheet?

I know I am showing my age here, but back in the AD&D 2nd being a Bard meant something!

You had Dual Classed as a Fighter and Thief... THEN you could become a Bard.
Back in those days you used your THAC0 from your current class until you exceeded your previous ones. You couldn't gain experience as a Bard if you fell back on your fighter/thief classes.
A Bard back in those days was NOT a Multi-Class, rather a DUAL class (More Accurately, TRIPLE).
Of course that was before there were Barbarians and Cavaliers, lol...

Thanks for the insights and advice.

As to my character sheet that's lost to both the decades and geography.

Do you want to be melee or ranged? Because I actually think you could have a very good dual hand crossbow build with college of sword

I'm pretty sure a college of sword bard without multiclass would do the trick. College of swords is already kind of dipping into fighter.

He was based on Stagger Lee from the Nick Cave song so dual crossbows kinda fits in. Back in the day he was mixed range and melee ... and all swagger

but you still get extra attack and action surge as fighter, so in the end you can have 6 attacks in one round with main hand action surging. Plus bard of the sword stances and critting on 19 as champion.

If he wants to go in melee or use ranged, the extra spells from bard are not that important.

Just go College of Swords - everybody wants to complicate things by multiclassing everything :P

First things first: a bard is always viable. :steammocking:

From what I can tell you can pretty much beat this game with a group of 4 of the same class. Just vary what each one can do enough and you'll have a party that can handle anything. There's always items to fill in ability/spell gaps.

What i did myself was college of swords 6/fighter 3, rogue 3, worked pretty well, all dex mind you

Like I said, I've never played 5e but remember Bards being underwhelming in both AD&D and 3.5.

I'm at the character creator screen checking out College of Swords.

The 2 level Fighter dip is okay for VALOR and a bit better for SWORDS. Basically you are doing it for “Action Surge”, some weapon proficiencies and the Shield Proficiency for Swords? In return you are losing 1 Feat and “Otto’s Dance”.

I like this choice for SWORDS a lot.

If you want a Swashbuckler build then do 8 SWORDS/4 Fighter Battle Master.

VALOR is better off with 2 levels of Paladin dip for the Smites.

Don’t Dip LORE into anything but 1 level of Wizard just to learn spells from Scrolls. LORE is a spell caster.
