This paid of as in act 3 she was the last one standing in difficult boss fights with massive waves of enemies, finishing fights that would have been defeats without her ability to take extreme damage whilst dealing it in return.
As a barbarian she probably would have been killed as well.
Just as "rocky"said : "It is not how hard you can hit, it is how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward":-)) Fighters in heavy armor with lots of constitution can do that.
My spellcasters are pretty impressive too, throwing mini nuclear explosions on massive waves of enemies but thye are glass cannons.....they usually get downed.
You can reach AC 20 pretty easily as almost any class in this game pretty early too. AC does most of the work on keeping you alive.
You can walk out of the character creator with a sorcerer that has 16 AC and a spell that increases it by 2 more and shield proficiency that gives you 2 more for a total of 20 before you leave the Mind Flayer ship for instance.
Druids are also very tanky.
