Balthazar now or later? [Act 2 Spoilers]

In the Temple of Shar, I can attack Balthazar now, or go into the inner sanctum and fight him there. I tried and it was tricky because 2 of my party were kicked off and died before they even got turns.

I'm siding with Shadowheart and am looking to defeat Ketheric. I think either way I kill Balthazar will fulfill those. But what other consequences are there?

0 consequences. You still have to kill him later, anyway

So it's possible to need to fight him twice? One in the temple, once deeper in with the Nightsong?

Honestly? I attacked him asap when i saw him, i went through the dialogue and attacked him.

No you fight him only once, you just decide when
