I mean, the offhand weapon kinda doesn't do anything, you get to use it to attack IF you want to burn your bonus action on it.
But you can also use a bigger, better weapon, with better feats for it, and then use your bonus action to deal extra damage with item skills/spells doing more attacks, or cast something like hunter's mark, or even apply some poison to your blade instead, so what's even the point?
If the offhand attack didn't cost anything and always went off along with the mainhand there would be a point, since it doesn't I'd much rather have a shield for bonus AC, or use a better 2h weapon, or even leave the hand empty and go with dueling feats instead, you'll probably end up doing more damage.
This is mostly correct but having two attack rolls and therefore two chances to hit can be relevant for damage per round calculations.
Is it worth it? Imo, no. Dual wielding is just almost always worse than 2h or 1h+shield in 5e.
However, if you like the idea of dual wielding, go for it. It's your character, your game, and it's not like you need to min-max to do well.
Thing is the more the game goes on, the less an extra bonus action is impactful, unless you do specific things.
anyway - i could be wrong/mis-remembering - but - the few times he got into melee - i would attack - and he'd try to hit with both weapons. i could then use his bonus action to do an off hand strike?
