I know what you mean, and let me tell you, you don't know what you want mate. There's already a game that tried real-time combat slap into CRPG, Pathfinders: WoTR, and good god that mode is terrible. Also call out Pillar of Eternity, the real-time combat that you want, get ready to press Space 7749 times because you're gonna pause the game a lot, like A LOT. At that point, they should already make a turn-based system from the get go.
Same with the horrible 'chain' mechanic.
RTwP was garbage back in the day and it’s garbage now. It doesn’t accurately reflect the complexity of party based rpg combat, it’s fiddly and annoying and a pain in the ass. It’s tension and “excitement” is artificial and comes mostly from the habit of companions to ignore given instructions or choose to do stuff that’s detrimental to what the player wants.
Encounter design is more basic and tends towards grind rather than narrative.
Screw RTwP. I’ve never played any cRPG that was better for it.
While Baldurs gate 3 is a very good GAME all the way around
