Larian stated they're supposed Githyanki is the least popular race.
How is Githyanki being the least popular race surprising? The fact that they are even playable is kind of a sore spot for me.

They are the ONLY race not from the PHB, and while I get that they are integral to the story, there are TONS of races that would have been much more appreciated. I will probably never play a Gith (aside of Lae'Zel) out of sheer SPITE.

Gith is probably among the 5 least popular races in all of D&D, so them being the only extra race to make it REALLY bothers me.

No Warforged makes sense; they're pretty specific setting wise. But not a SINGLE one of the giant descendant races made it? Firbolg has been around since 1e. And Goliath is my most played race.

Lack of Genasi severely limits customization.

Not one single beast race ostracizes an entire community.

Goblins and Bugbears are straight up in the game, but not playable.

Half orcs are playable, but as far as I know full blooded orcs don't even exist.

I'm not upset that Githyanki are playable, and I welcome any options we can have... But saying it's surprising that they are the least popular race WOULD straight up make me wonder if Larian even did any kind of research in the D&D community, if it werent for the fact that the game is so damn good.

I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed.

Keep up the good work but for the love of God give us races better than effing Gith.

Edit: Man this thread went from a joke (Gith really aren't THAT bad, man) to a lot of angy people REAL fast.

i agree it should of had full orcs maybe goblins to play but nope we get another bethesda dragonborn

Uh... Dragonborn from D&D straight up predate Skyrim? They were first from 3.5, with the source book they were originally from releasing in 2006. That's a full 5 years before Skyrim.

Gith have nice race features but dat grinch effect is hard to get past.
The races are a bit weird with the drow being pulled out of the elf subrace category and split into two identical races.
What is missing is well covered, but meh. Its plenty of choices, and I am satisfied with the offering.

they tend to be lawful evil. they tend to be very racist, violent, ssholes that constantly challenge any rules, orders, commands etc. so of course most people dont roleplay them irl dnd. so its not surprising players dont create them in the game. and why when you have a companion who is already an incredibly annoying gith.

id rather like to see other races like kobolds, fairy, harengon, kenku, tabaxi...

Some comments take an ugly turn here.

There's nothing wrong with "I don't like the Githyanki in general" because [insert your favorite reason here].

But comparing a fictional race (which was a former slave race long enough to have forgotten its origins, thanks to its masters, just saying) to NeoN*zis is highly offending and shouldn't be ignored easily.

A different take:

True.
Then again, just pick ANY race in Elder Scrolls Lore and tell 'em they're not racist. You even can consider the Altmer (the settings take on High Elves) as "lawful evil" as, in the long turn, they want to "ascend to godhood by unmaking reality". It even makes Dunmer (Dark Elves / "Drow") look less racist - and out of five high houses, two are build on slaves and all of them look down on anyone that isn't them. But at least they don't want unmake reality ...
Both beast races (Argonians and Kajiit) are always victims of extreme racism, mostly by all kinds of elves, less so by men.

Just saying. When it comes to racism, fictional races are usually guilty. Some more, some less, but all of them are massively racist against each other.

Someone mentioned it earlier, but yeah what's up with Half-Orcs being the only kind of orc? It's the same thing in both Pathfinder games as well, only Half-Orcs. It's like full blooded orcs don't exist anymore (they do, but are never seen in either game) and nowhere in this game as well.

In D&D at least, it's because Orcs were a villain/monster race, so they were only included as a playable race later in Monsters of the Multiverse. As for the half orc bit... I guess if you ♥♥♥♥ an orc it makes a non-evil child? lol

It's really weird.

Yeah I mean I'm not -unhappy- with the options. We have a lot, and it's fantastic, better than 90% of games. Just several things I'd love to see in an update. :)

I don't think any of that matters.

It's a video game. I bet more people playing this don't even know what they are before they roll their character than do know it. They're going off visuals and racials. And the visuals of the gith are so bad the decent racials don't make up for it.

The people making this choice over lore are going to be rare. It's looks. I bet if the game came standard with a mod that made them look like the elves they'd be a top pick.
zombygunner 12 AGO 2023 a las 9:12 a. m.
Dokuujin you are correct but this game isnt D&D very loosely built that way and im willing to bet they used it because of the popularity that skyrim gave it..so they copied a good thing from one game and hoped it would be popular here maybe

the Githyanki get me Nazi Germany vibes, they call themself a superior race, and that nobody else fits them. Even when you mention their ugly facial features (looking like a green bat) they instead attack you with "For me, you look ugly, look at your nose it feels like it doesnt fit there)
so i dont know why would people not want to play this race, amaright >?

Almost made my main character one of these critters but I typically play good/human first run. After whatshername ordered me to cut her down out of the cage and refused to say please I walked away. She was gone the next time I came through the area. Just a broken cage was there LOL. There should be some fun next time we meet.

Well, being a German, it's "funny" to read such lines.

They don't feel a bit like **** Germans as they don't genocide innocent ppl. They're a former slave race still fighting against their former masters. And they've been a slave race long enough to have forgotten who they really were before (including their race's name). So whatever they were before, now they're "Space Spartans" or "Klingons" or some other "proud warrior race" that puts combat proficiency and personal honor before anything else as they're in an everlasting war against the Mindflayers.

I actually can sympathize.

If you cut the slave race part, what's left feels like Imperial Japan. Or maybe Imperial Germany. But decidedly NOT **** Germany.

I made a githyanki for my first character because their starting bonuses are op as ♥♥♥♥.

I was playinbg as the typical goody goody character, but then every Githyanki i encountered was a massive ♥♥♥♥. My character felt so out of place that i just had to scrub that game and make a new one.
