I read someone saying that it's to do with the latest Geforce driver, but I have no evidence that this is true apart from it only starting when I updated my Geforce drivers, but there was also a game update around the same time. I am reluctant to roll back my drivers.
I was also getting darkened portraits on level up until I reset my in-game HDR calibration to default levels, and then "reset" portraits during level up by trying to multiclass and then cancelling the multiclass
I think what is happening is that the game generates portraits using an renderer whenever your character levels up, and how they render it is malfunctioning when it tries to account for HDR calibration
Don't think it has anything to do with the latest GeForce drivers as I was getting this issue on launch day with the previous drivers

Top portrait
Anyway, my guess is that the game also uses standard methods of capturing portraits that they render and it doesn't properly account for HDR settings
I'm not using HDR and it's still happening in my game. It pretty much always happens as soon as I get a fourth party member for some reason.
Edit: Only happens once I level them up. Definitely something wrong with the portrait creation function, but hard to say what.
I'm not using HDR either. I did correctly set the gamma in the beginning per the instructions.

A "fix" is switching from Vulkan to DX11 (or the other way around?) and then level up the character. Then switch back. Needs to be done for every level up or it goes dark again. If you have already saved with the dark portrait, you have to wait for the next level up.
Thx a lot. Before DX11 I tried 10 times on the Vulkan.
My final portrait was created using underwear instead of standard armor. xD
