Why is there mind flayer sex?

Mind flayers reproduce asexually. An elder brain produces parasites that burrow into a host's brain and slowly turns them into a new mind flayer. This fact is central to the main plot of the game. I don't know if mind flayers are even supposed to have sex organs, but even if they are, they certainly wouldn't have a sex drive. Why is this in the game? Is it a joke?

mind flayers and githyanki both reproduce asexually but can have sex for pleasure like a conventional humanoid. in the case of the gith they can lay pre-fertilized eggs on command, laezel even explains this if you ask. officially speaking mind flayers as we know them are actually drones warped from their previous forms through ceremorphosis, subsequently their genetalia are also preserved and transformed in the event one must become an elder brain should it need to form its own colony. even under an elder brain's thrall an illithid is a person with desires, goals. some gamble, others read, ♥♥♥♥ thralls, eat thralls, etc. their primary reproduction method may be asexual, but they still have needs as individuals, contrary as that may seem.

but since most of you here are cowards, i'll simply go "sex bad, REEEEE-" and end my explanation there!

Sexually. Humans reproduce sexually. That means they have sex. Asexual reproduction does not require sex.

Sexually. Humans reproduce sexually. That means they have sex. Asexual reproduction does not require sex.

Mind flayer reproduce asexually but they do have the concept of gender (from original host). As for drive and pleasure, it's not mentioned in any lore (of course) so it's up to DM (Larian in this case) to improvise.

dunno, i know for mind flayers it was a thing in the drizzt novels mentioned in passing, but official sources from dnd tend to deliberately keep details vague. as a rule the dm of the setting can choose his or her interpretation of what their game's lore does or does not have, as our current dm are the writers of larian, that means the specifics of their setting's lore that doesn't contradict bg1/2's lore is canon to the game. ultimately bg1/2/3 is its own specific setting. if this is what larian went with, then thats what we're in for when playing at their table. remember that dnd is a story as much as it is a game. and the dm decides the lore of the setting while we decide where it goes.
