Throwing Barb absolutely busted
With tavern brawler adding x2STR to throw attacks, and early equipment you can find (gloves and ring that add 1d4 to throw attacks), tactician mode has been absolutely trivialized for me. Without accounting for height advantages (which is quite easy to do in most fights), thrown weapons at level 4 are doing 20+ damage consistently per throw (weapon damage, +8 STR, +2 rage, +2d4 from equipment). Having the ability as a level 5 berserker to throw 3 times a turn after rage results in dealing 75+ single target damage a turn. Wouldn't have seen myself advocating for this, but maybe having to prepare a thrown weapon a la classic DND might have been a good idea?

Something has to be bugged with this:

Still in Act 1, lvl 5

Karlach throws returning pike

1d10 + 1 + 4 (str) + 1d4 + 1d4 (items)
then 4 from tavern brawler (doubling str)
then ANOTHER 1d4 + 1d4 from throwing item bonuses on tavern brawler again (bug)
then in my case 11 UNMISSABLE damage from higher elevation

I just hit for 38 damage and then 42 damage just throwing the pike twice in a turn. And since I'm getting +13 to hit it's pretty hard to miss anyway.

Tempted to stop throwing things since it's a bit too strong.

I love it, use a modified version with Karlach(she's a Fighter, the extra feats are too nice to pass up I think). My only issue is throwing angles are REALLY broken sometimes and just won't allow you to do something that should easily be feasible. Like a knee high wall blocking your throw; not to mention EVERYTHING is a lob and there's no kind of straight LoS toss of any kind.

Karlach with returning pike is my main source of damage, it's kinda silly.

Though the only thing I'd say they should maybe nerf is getting bonus falling damage for throwing. Right now you get that damage + more for being higher up and it is a bit much

Though at some point I'm wondering if Eldritch Knight being able to grant returning to any weapon can outdo this with a later game weapon
Well... imma just say there is a very direct, and SIGNIFICANT upgrade to the returning pike later on. No other weapon with the thrown tag can even remotely keep up with the pike until you find that upgrade.

How is that too strong? My melee fighter hits similar numbers and doesn't need magic items to do it. A rogue with sharpshooter hits similar numbers too from stealth. Heck, it does less damage than a wizard's fireball if the enemy made the save, does about the same damage as a Guiding Bolt from a cleric, and is greatly dwarfed by a sorcerer's maximize AOE spell. Just sit back and enjoy.

Fireball does 8-48 at this level and can be cast twice in a fight. So that's ~28 average per target, maybe better if they clump up, worse if they save.

Karlach just did 80 damage with a single action at level 5. I'd need to hit at least two targets with fireball to compete, and that uses a spell slot. Karlach used absolutely no resources, I didn't even bother to rage first.

I think a melee fighter would have a hard time hitting for 40 damage an attack at level 5, especially without magic items.

Not to mention like I said, there's 11 damage in there that can't even miss! Even if I'd gotten two critical misses I'd still have done 22 damage that round.

Not to mention that on a hit the absolute minimum damage roll is 25! That's rolling a 1 for damage 5 times in a row to still hit for 25, too.

Bought it in the goblin camp

Though honestly throwing spears is pretty comparable if you don't have it, just a pain to pick them all back up

The game has insanely strong items for early level-mid level game play. Yet, there are still posts here or there complaining that the items aren't good enough.

Yeah, that's one of the advantages to D&D 5e. Magic items actually feel magical again. 3.5 edition made them feel so weak in comparison, just another part of your build for stat stacking.
['w'] 12 AGO 2023 a las 10:21
now you need to try a build where you throw items on fire and stack artifacts which enhance fire damage too

I did one better. Instead of a mage, I use a throwables thief to buff my team. You get so many consumables, might as well. Alchemy has been really helpful and I can chuck potions at people to make them stronger. Plus there's sleep potions and poison and other offensive potions too.

Oh and best part is it doesn't use concentration.
