Don't know what comes next, but at least he no longer complains he's too big for the hole. Using the spell that makes things smaller didn't even work.
I put the nearby chest on the burrow, and he did indeed leave through the front door, but you can actually follow him outside. He walks all the way to the Blighted Village and simply disappears. I reloaded a few times and he takes slightly different paths after he crosses the bridge, but disappears around Blighted Village each time. I did go down the well because he disappeared somewhat close to it one time, but he wasn't there.
