Get him in the fire and hit him with bludgeoning weapons.
I killed him in one turn on tactician without using the machine. Buff up. Haste bless hex and make sure you get advantage and smack him withc2 or 3 martials especially paladin and he will die first turn I suggest to cast fly. Press the valve for heat him up and beat him to death Enjoy. Put hammers on everyone don't forget 🔨
I beat him the first time around without too much trouble by using blunt damage and luring him into the forge lava to make him vulnerable (you can learn about his weaknesses and such easily by examining him and paying attention to his status). When you combine his vulnerability to bludgeoning damage with the fact he chases whoever attacked him last, you can lure him in circles and beat him to a pulp. Admittedly if you are doing a very novel party composition like four wizards you might struggle to kill him with your spell slots, but for a balanced party it should be reasonable.
I guess from what other people have said you can lure him under the actual hammer of the forge to kill him much more easily, but it's hardly necessary - I didn't think to do that.
He's pretty much immune to damage unless he has the Superheated status, at which point bludgeoning will do double damage. He becomes Superheated when he's been standing in lava, and it lasts for 2 rounds after he leaves lava. When someone hits him, they gain the Prime Target status and he'll target them. Use this to draw his attention and get him into the lava. The lava will drain after a few rounds, but you can use the valve to release the lava again. Here's a very basic strat:
BEFORE using the lava valve to start the fight, separate your party. Position one or two frontline characters with bludgeoning weapons on the left or right platforms of where he spawns. Place one character near the lava valve(this can be one of your frontliners), one near the hammer level, and finally one character with ranged attacks on the mould box near the crucible.
First round he won't do anything but Awaken. It's free DPS and he's superheated, so go to town. After that, have the character on the mould box draw his attention and get him to run towards the center. If they miss it's no big deal, just keep pounding away with your frontliners, while the lever/mould characters heal and support.
Once he gets near it, have the character near the hammer lever activate it. The character on the mould box will be 100% safe, but poor Grym will probably suffer around 140 points of bludgeoning damage.
And then just repeat.
Ok.
Yeah, I beat him without knowing about the forge hammer mechanic working (I assumed it would be disabled) with my monk doing most of the damage through flurry of blows and such.
