And special abilities.
This isn't the kind of game where you end up doing 20x your starting damage or anything, but it starts to add up quite a bit.
But yes, getting stronger weapons also helps. As do class abilities as you level up.
beat up the hag in act 1, don't kill her for an option to take a reward for +1 stat of your choice
shame on EA there was a bug that gave you 2 items
Some magic items will boost stats temporarily or permanently. Potions of <X> Giant Strength and Belts of <X> Giant Strength have been in every edition, I suspect, and I'd be surprised if they didn't exist anywhere in BG3.
If your strength-based melee weapon of choice has the Heavy tag, the Great Weapon Master feat offers the option to accept a -5 to hit in exchange for +10 to damage. That's a pretty giant hit penalty, so this is something that you should do the math for. e.g. if the target is so low an AC that you'll probably hit it anyway, or if has so high AC that you need a natural 20 to hit it. Some monsters might damage you each time you hit them. For instance, if it's made of fire, don't be surprised if you get burned each time you hit it. In such cases, it might be worth it to accept a lower chance of hitting in exchange for the hits that do land being more damaging.
If you're building a sword-and-board fighter, or really any one-handed-weapon + shield fighter, the Dueling fighting style gets you +2 to damage.
Duelling only works for non-versatile weapons like rapiers, scimitars etc. The feat which gets you second die on damage roll might be better, I haven't tested it yet.
