perception checks
I read something recently indicating that dark vision does nothing and that natural darkness has no effect.

Can anyone confirm?
Not a specialist but apparently in DND5 it has effect and that is what the game is supposed to use for checks ?
In terms of lighting it's quite useful as they balanced all light sources in the game and Darkvision in particular is useful in dark places without having to use a Torch or Light cantrip.

In terms of combat it is especially useful for ranged characters as they do not have disadvantage in the dark.

Dark vision can affect your ability to hit things in darkness. If you are a human in the underdark (or any dakr place), with no light sources, you are effectively blind and will have disadvantage on attack rolls. I believe it also gives disadvantage to perception checks as well.

Its false. In complete darkness without darkvision you'll see the disadvantage symbol on enemies you try to attack with "Too Dark" shown.
Dark Vision lets you treat darkness as dim light, and ignores the restrictions from dim light within it's range.

Which effectively adds up to remove disadvantage on perception rolls and attack rolls in areas where those effects would otherwise effect you.

The best way to see the effect is to add gale or wyll (of course without his darkvision invocation) to your party, go to the underdark and experiment with what the game shows you in the darker areas.

darkvision matters when you're in the underdark, especially if you're a ranger/rogue.

but then it's also very easy to get it through various means,
like literally a single level in warlock has a free 24m dark vision as part of their pact. and if you get a cleric, just get sunlight spell at tier3. the aos is so huge jsut put that on a melee dude and he will light up the battlefield anyway.
There is a point in grimforge where devs even put an orb of darkvision so people could pass spot checks for traps.

This game is so far removed from D&D 5e that it sickens me to hear people even mention them together any more.

And thank god for that, the further it gets from 5e the better.
