Not quite.
You can totally talk to Isobel, you just have to prevent her from kidnapping. You can then finish up the rest of the area and do the Nightsong last. That's pretty much the ideal outcome.
Right here, in this one stop (in a game of hundreds or thousands or similar stops), look at the possible outcomes.
You can save or not save Isobel, pick up a major character as a companion or kill her (Jaheira), Cure the Shadow Curse or not.
You might save the Harpers of the Last Light Inn (if Isobel is not kidnapped and Shadowheart does one thing). You might kill the Harpers and Jaheira like the OP. The harpers might die in a battle by you (with Jaheira as an ally) after Isobel is kidnapped and they are infected with the curse.
Have one of your major companions either become a Dark Justiciar or not.
And with all of those outcomes, it is possible to go on and do the next phase of the game.
People do one thing and say the game is so rushed .. but right there are many possible parallel outcomes, some fast and some slow. Some one step, some several.
Oh, and it is absolutely in character for Jaheira to give you a truth serum. She has no idea who you are. You are just some adventurer coming into the Inn in the middle of the Shadow Curse. She has her own quest and worries. She has things she needs to figure out to help the Inn, get rid of the curse, etc. Nothing wrong with that writing. Nothing out of character about it at all.
So I don't fault you for mashing her into paste. Just don't let Minsc see you do it.
Right now, I'm not finding that, Whatsherface got kidnapped, so all of the Harpers died. Did a whole bunch of stuff, went to the moonlight tower and there is literally 12-15 bad guys, a boss, and at least 3-4 clerics.
All of the guides I've read "oh this will be an easy fight because the Harpers will kill most of these.."
Well.. all my harpers are dead.
Soo. I guess I'm just ♥♥♥♥♥♥? What kind of game does that? I can not win that fight.
Nope you cannot rescue isobel but you will find her again at near the end of act 2 making the fight more harder then needed.
But what is actually better in terms of NET value. A more powerful party, or more of that sweet, sweet story and dialogue?
This may sound like a sarcastic question, but I'm genuinely torn. Because I'm playing on the highest difficulty, the only way to get the result I want, is to get my party killed in their next battle without having saved and replay out all of those dialogues for the 4th time.
