About Paladin Divine Smite
Does anybody know why when I go to my Paladin's spellbook I have 4 options for Divine Smite Reaction?
2 identical ones for Critical and 2 identical ones for normal, why the repetition?
I never played D&D so am I missing something?

It's not an issue, just something odd and slightly annoying

different spellslots, higher levels means extra damage dice rolled

You have the normal reaction so you can tell the game to ask you for all attacks whether you wanna smite or not (like using a non-standard Weapon attack (Lacerate etc))

THe smite on critical is there so you can chose to auto smite when you crit, as that's the most effective way to use Divine Smite, when you dont need burst.

Yeah that I get, what I don't get is why in the spellbook i have 2 icons for the critical reaction with identical tooltips, and two icons for the normal reaction, also with identical tooltips?

So does that mean as I get more spell slots ill get even more Divine Smite Reaction icons in the spellbook?
Seems like a strange way to implement this

It's a bit strange, aye. But it all appears at the same time, like a list. You only get to toggle the desired level of smite.

Just activate them all in reactions, that way you can choose depending on the HP of the enemy. If I remember correctly every level above 1 is an extra d10 radiant. So you can eyeball it.

edit: bear in mind it's only worth it to smite on criticals as otherwise you are dealing half the damage... or even less if you cast it directly, because that way you can Miss!

Larian had to code it this way because there are 4 different conditions for attacking. Regular attack, reaction attack, critical attack and reaction critical attack. They probably included it in the spellbook like that for people who might be new to the rules of D&D to make it very clear that Divine Smite can be used in all 4 of these situations.

Look at the icons of both identical smite reactions, see the very small I and II in the corner???

One uses the first spell slot, and the other uses the second spell slots, which is a more powerful version of the first spell slot. And the same for spell slot III when you get high enough level.

You can use a low tier spell and make it more powerful by using higher tier spell slots.

The reactions are there to tell the game which one you want to use. If you dont want it using your spell slots I, because you use those for healing spells, then tell it to use slot II spell slots then.

I have this issue too and it really looks like a UI bug. I have 2 copies of each reaction Divine Smite spell, that are completely identical. Moreover, in the actions panel I have two greyed out critical reaction spells, and one of them have a small plus icon at the top right. Not sure what that is...
Basically, because it's a strategy to only smite when you crit (because you do more damage that way), so you can set your reactions to only pop up on crit, on.hit, both, or neither. And you can do this for each spell level (when I have a caster with Shield, for example, I turn off all popups higher than level 1 because I would never use a slot higher than that and I specifically reserve my lvl 1 slots just for that spell).

It's just a high level of customization.

Mine DEFINITELY does not have those, and when I mouse over, all 4 say level 1 spell slot. At paladin level 2, I don't even have level 2 spell slots, but I have 4 reaction smites, and roll 4d8 radiant.

Half the people who replied weren't even paying attention, we're not talking about the reactions page. we are talking about the spellbook, where 5 divine smites are listed: Normal, reaction, reaction critical, reaction, reaction critical. This is at level 2, so I only HAVE level 1 spell slots. The point people are making, is that 5 are listed -- two of which are identical -- and they don't NEED to be visible in the spellbook considering the ONLY one you can drag to your bar is the 'normal' divine smite button. I would guess the cloned two are for OA's. Dunno.
