Is it not possible to spare the owlbear and it's cub?
I enabled non-lethal attacks, and upon knocking out the owlbear with the cub, the cutscene triggered as if I had killed it. is this a bug ?

You could walk away without attacking them.

You can, but it leads to the same options - attack them or back away and leave them alone.

Most players are fairly certain that non-lethal is just something the game says and it's still lethal regardless. There is a way out of the situation without resorting to violence from your party.

Yes, that is how you spare them. You walk away and leave them alone.

Just dont go into the main cave, go the side route for the Selune chest. and all you are missing out on is the EXP for killing them, the Medium Armor (which might be good for later sections for the Bonus damage against undead) and the Owlbear Egg

You can spare the cub if you only kill the mother. It will then join you at camp.

There is a magic item behind them. You can get this without killing either.

The mother bear has a component on her that makes a very nice weapon. Pretty sure there is no way to get this other than killing her.

I am aware. I used animal speaking and backed away, but was curious if knocking the bear out and returning would get some kind of special dialogue.

i've used non-lethal during fights that ensued from escaping from prison or pickpocketing and it worked just fine, went for a long rest and the people i knocked out (albeit with a low opinion of me) were walking around and alive.

There's something you can discover by returning later after certain other events play out. I can type no more before going into spoiler territory.

This is not completely true. There are things you don't miss out on by entering and not attacking, but you must return later for them after other events play out elsewhere.
