What you're told by Ex-Archduke Ravenguard (i.e. that Ansur is waiting down there for Baldur's Gate to need his aid because he agreed to it once and nobody ever sought it) is not consistent with the reality of the situation (i.e. that you have Illithid Balduran in an artifact on your person, that Ansur tried to mercy-kill Balduran, got killed in self-defense, and you are going to visit him along with the monster that killed him).
you can take the helmet, it is not a bug. I always took it before the fight which starts after you interact with him.
On a serious note, no, it sucks this game doesn't actually let you do what you want nearly as much as you'd think it would.
