Is Baldur’s Gate right for me?
This game is super out of my genre. But the absolute wave of praise has me questioning if I should give it a shot. It’d be one thing if I could freely try it but obviously it’s a full $60 purchase to find out. Probably the closest experience I’ve had to something “similar” is fallout 1 and 2 and maybe that’s stretching the term ‘similar’. I stick a lot to Bethesda rpgs personally for my game preferences. My biggest fear honestly is how much more complex games like this and divinity look. They seem like a great time! But the hundreds of different icons to remember and abilities and multiple characters to manage always looks overwhelming. Like how an MMO’s menu screen tends to look. I typically also find myself playing games as a lone wolf. Managing companions never hit so much for me when I simultaneously make my own inserted character in the world. Like, I want them to have the best gear I found adventuring stuff! And develop their own story. They’re my main focus of course. Maybe I’m overthinking the complexity of the party system? Maybe I can just try it and find myself actually liking it. It’s these things that make me worried the game might not be for me. But I’d love to be told otherwise!

Speaking as someone who LOVES the game. Don't let all the praise fool you. It's still very much a party-based, turn-based, crpg with a ridiculous amount of options for what to do in battle for each of your party members.

Based on what you typed, you aren't going to enjoy playing it unless you have some kind of epiphany while playing that changes your whole mindset and game preferences.

You will have to control your companions only during battles, apart from that they just follow you around.

agreed. the story telling and feeling like the world is interacting with YOU completely takes a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ dive when you hit act 3 and the worst part is act 3 is the LARGEST. it's like falling back to old school rpgs where you have to spend endless hours to find anything interesting which is neat in spurts but I want the world to feel alive and not feel like it's just waiting for me in some hidden corner waiting for me like a sign post. despite the huge amount of stories/quests in act 3 it lacks production value where the first 2 acts were overwhelming build up to just drop off like that

Watch a few youtubers playing- seems to be a few now. Try "Retcon Raider"

God, some people being so rude.

If I were you, I would buy Divinity 2 before this.

It's very similar but it's cheaper. That means it will give you a good indication as to whether you will like BG3 but you'll also be risking less money. The reality is that the nature of the games make it hard to work out whether you like it or not within the two hour refund window.

Divinity 2 is also more complex BUT (mostly) easier to understand. Once you've got that solid foundation from Divinity, it will be relatively easy to make the switch to BG3.

In terms of the party system, it's actually very streamlined. Mostly, companions just follow you around without you needing to do anything. You will only really engage with it properly:

1. In combat which is turn based. Each character gets a separate combat turn in which you'll control them; and
2. Occasionally, you'll want to switch to another character for things. For example, my rogue is waaaay better at lock picking than my main character.

As out of this genre as you, I would say:

1) if you really want to go into this game, you need to be very very very very prepared
2) you need to know as much mechanism of this game as possible
3) if you don't study any feature, you won't be able to enjoy the freedom the game offers
4) all the praise it got from the community is attributed to old players who are very familiar with the gameplay

If you go in plain, you might find it so dull before you can even feel the fun.

You have 40 hours in ATOM RPG, I don't think Baldurs 3 will be any more difficult for you.

I never liked the original Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of The Republic because I never felt that my actions mattered, and I didn't understood the point of having a party, but this game changed all of that. If you like RPG's, this is a MUST. Please, trust me. Do you like difficult games? This one will give you quite a challenge. Do you mind to play for a few hours to get good at the game? Do you like very long games and replayability? Do you hate cutscenes or having to talk to NPC's? This game is just on another freaking level, I have never seen anything like it... I'm still in shock after a few days playing it.

Just get the game, you won't be disappointed.

That's would be good point, baldur's gate 1 and 2 should be cheap and good sale, but however, even baldur's gate 1 and baldur's gate 2 combat is not same even, baldur's gate 3 combat is not same as well. Baldur's gate 1 where you can summon many powerful monster to overcome enemies, I use all party range, not melee to stay alive, and not die. If you do melee in baldur's gate 1, you are so easy die doing like that but baldur's gate 2, you can melee much better due lot of health point, but range power is less now and summon is very limited, no more horde of summing (that is not good because I enjoy that gameplay type, I don't care it's overpower, I just love it but they take away from it)

So, there you go, try baldur's gate 1 and 2 on sale, it's easier to understand what is all about., story are great as well (noticed baldur's gate 1 and 2 are linked, you can import your character from baldur's gate 1 to 2.) Downside, it's very old game, 2d graphic.
Noticed Baldur's gate 1 and 2 had nothing to do with story this game baldur's gate 3!

Personally, I'd recommend playing Dragon Age Origin as an older, cheaper alternative to see if this type of game suits a person, over BG1/BG2 or DOS 2. BG3 is way more like DA:O than any of those other 3 games. Just mho.

Every friend I have who is playing it has said pretty much the same thing.

Although, I don't think you can get nearly as good of a sale price on DA:O as those other 3.

I bought this game in a moment of weakness, knowing full well I'm going to hate the combat and speccing/loadouts isn't my hobby either. I don't care about 664 spells and abilities, weapons and poitions. But I love all other aspects of games like this so much ; exploring, finding secrets, companions and their shenanigans, choice matters, story etc

So the lure was too strong and I fooled myself ;
"This time you are going to like it. This time you will stick with it".
WRONG!

I started out full of enthousiasm but that quickly dwindled after finding myself reading more about the game than actually playing it. I do try to learn but I still hate this type of combat.

That being said, I do love this game and in general I'm having a blast. I'm still in act one though and I dread what's coming. I read about a fight that lasted about 2 hours. Erm.....

You better off try out starfield (I guess it's had to wait couple week later) since you seem to be fan of first person shooter game type on basic of your history but however, I'm not sure you are singe player fan or not, if you strong fan of MMO, then you can forgot about starfield and this game, look other type game. Based of your history most of your game are mostly first person shooter, but I'm not sure you play single player or MMO.

This game baldur's gate 3 is based party-team single player or coop 3 top down views, command party here and there with understanding rule of roll dice tactical and strategy with random chance that lead fail or success, so if you want action that guaranteed results like game you play as first person shooter, this game might not your type to play.
This game had lot of dialogue, and some puzzle, it's not action straight to the point game type.
Definitely looking forward to starfield! It’s true that I am a first person lover at heart. And sure some shooters here and there are a good time. A nice wave shooter typically when I don’t know what to play. I’m honestly in a bit of a slog right now not knowing what to play. Which is why I want to fill that month long gap till with something. I typically always play single player. And mmos… I’m trying to get into eso. It’s just the learning curve for mmos is something I’m really not use to. But for the spoken dialogue and characters and exploration and all that I am always enthusiastic for!

This isn't really my genre, but I love this and already put DOS and Desperados on my wishlist (They are still pretty expensive). I have played this type of game before and got bored. That was Dragon Age which I will be going back to now.

The problem I had was when I was young instead of playing dungeons and dragons I was partying and getting laid. Damn my misspent youth. So I never really got into it. Bloody am now though!

Buy Divinity Original Sin 1 (it's cheaper than 2 and still great) on sale and play it. $60 is too much for a game you might not like.

The game isn't particularly complex, you start with just a few attack options/spells/skills and progressively get more options like most rpg games, it's the same with Divinity 1.

if you never played rts game, this game wont be for you. this is like turn base game in 3d space with a Dungeons and Dragons rule mechanic.

like warcraft when u control a hero except in this game u control 4 with different abilities and build, and it wont flow like league of legend / dota but u have to pause a lot. turn base is completely different genre, not really for an arcady gamer. you play this type of game for story rich experience and tinkering with character builds.

it plays like pathfinder / pillars of eternity / and Divinity original sin.
