Possible Glitch with Raphael's quest regarding Orthan Yurgir

So I'm not sure what occurred with the quest "Kill Raphael's Old Enemy" for me, but it really didn't seem right.
I accepted the quest from Raphael outside the Mausoleum. I didn't realize this initially, but I apparently walked in a certain direction that caused me to immediately end up in battle with Yurgir without any dialogue taking place, like I've seen others experience. That alone wouldn't be a problem for me, but after he was killed, I never had Raphael contact me or show up regarding this quest again. I was really bummed about this because I've been trying to keep Astarion in my party despite him being one of the weaker team members, simply due to the fact that I find his story to be quite intriguing. I never learned what was written on his back - after I killed Yurgir, I noticed the quest changed to saying "Raphael left without telling us what was written on Astarion's back - I guess we'll have to ask [his master] in Baldur's Gate ourselves".
I just can't see this being what the dev's meant to happen. If they allow you to be ambushed by this sidequest boss without engaging in the dialogue, then it shouldn't cause the rest of the sidequest to simply act like you never killed him to begin with. Just... so bizarre.

...Other than some glitching with quests here and there, and some other random, less frustrating glitches, I truly think this game is a masterpiece and I'm sure they'll fix this quest eventually (if it is indeed glitched for me like I think it is). If anyone has any light they can shine on this occurrence for me, I'd greatly appreciate the help!!

I'm having the same problem here. I managed to somehow bypass the displacer beast entirely, had to reload my game several times because when I talked to Yurgir, I wasn't given ANY option to kill him after talking to him. So I had to just outright attack him. And then afterwards, I managed to make it all the way to Act 3 before realizing that Raphael never showed up, and Astarion is talking to me as if I had already seen him and had the scars translated. I have no idea how to trigger the scene, but it's really frustrating that I've gone through probably another 10ish hours of gameplay before realizing that the quest fritzed out.
If anyone can figure out a way to trigger this, I think a lot of us would appreciate it.

I've raised it as a bug with Larian now. (The only reason I didn't before is because I misremembered it as a system where I had to report via a forum that would never let me log in, but I was thinking of a different game.) So fingers crossed they'll pick it up in a future patch.

I'm loath to necro a thread, but I did some goofing around and found a weird scenario and after I searched a bit on the internet, I ended up here.
So, yeah, if you try to pickpocket the hoarding meregon, Yurgir and his group will exit "Ambushing" buff and they'll forever be hostile.
I think it's triggered by the fact that NPCs wander around after you steal from them.

I guess, in this case, crime doesn't pay and forces you to reload something from way back.

I have the very same problem. However, I DID have the conversation with Yurgir:

I encountered Raphael at the entrance of the mausoleum, I had Astarion in my party and I knew about his markings, but he didn't mention anything about them to Raphael.
Later on, I went to camp and talked to Astarion. A dialogue option was available to tell him that I met Raphael and that I couldn't ask him about his markings.
Then I went to Shar's Gauntlet and had a conversation with Yurgir, he told me about his contract with Raphael and then I killed him.
Since then I haven't heard of Raphael until Act 3, and I still know nothing about Astarion's markings.

I had the same issue. I cant romance him because this scene never triggered and because you cant summon/meet raphael later to figure it out? Its so dumb at least let us in act 3 meet him and decipher it so we can get astarions quest forward and romance like wtf. He was in my party and i tolld him id help.

Having the same problem. I had no option to talk to Yurgir since the Displacer Beast attacked me immediately, and even after chaining a few long rests together to see if Raphael would show up... nothing. I've just entered Act III. Is it too late at this point? Am I going to have to go back to before the end of Act II? IDK if I'm willing to do the Shadowfell, Moonrise pt2, AND the Mindflayer colony all over again just for this one quest!

Hello. I have the same problem though ive talked to yurgir. As soon as the conversation triggers a journal entry notif pops up. when im out of the dialogue and check the journal. it says that raphael left without telling us about the scars.
have anyone found a solution to this specific version of the problem?

Having a similar problem where I was able to trigger Yurgir's dialogue normally. Nothing was instantly hostile. I killed Yurgir via persuasion options. Astarion didn't have any dialogue options commenting on killing the orthon after the fact either. Updated quest for the Pale Elf says that Raphael left without revealing Astarion's scars.

Either way I deal with Yurgir (killing him outright, telling him to kill himself or using the rats to fulfill his contract), I get a journal entry that says that Raphael left without revealing anything about Astarion's scars. I've tried with mods and without, same outcome. Either my save is bugged to hell or there's something else really wrong here. I don't really wanna go through all of the Act 2 end boss fights only to enter Act 3 and find out I've missed crucial steps in Astarion's questline.

Nope im pretty sure it doesn't miss crucial steps.
I never had Raphael's dialogue after killing Yurgir either.
Most people here are only referring to missing cutscene with Yurgir, doesn't seem like anyone gets dialogue with Raph after.
Which maybe means, this is the way it's actually supposed to happen, Raphael leaves, and you have to find him again later

It might be it gets lost if you got a lot of camp sleep scenes queued up?

I have literally the same problem! I kill Yurgir and my character literally comments how Raphael will be happy, but when I check journal the quest says that Raphael left for Baldur's Gate without helping Astarion, and now I don't know what to do! The thing is I am already romancing Astarion, I managed to get him to date my character by going to tower first. From my research if you don't get Raphael's help that ends Astarion's romance, but Astarion has no comment about me killing the Orthon or the deal, he didn't get angry or try to break up with me, it's like the deal doesn't even exist. I don't want to proceed with my save and find out that it somehow ruined many hours of gameplay! And that quest is so bugged that I am worried that even if they patch it my save is broken for eternity now. Because I didn't notice the journal thing in time and save right before entering Shar's temple is now gone! I will try to report the problem, but I don't know what to do anymore.

There are many ways to take out Yurgir in the game. And all will work. I have entered from the 'wrong way' and by following the big cat. And I even have tried to kill the rats to avoid killing him (failed, had to kill him). You can even make Yurgir kill all his folks, the big cat and him self just by talking to him . But you got to follow the big cat into his ambush if you want to talk to him.
Either way the game will run along in the same way. No problems.
