They died in a mining accident though, during forced labor, sure, but it wasn't some mass murder you've uncovered.
But you'd have to fight them anyway when big boss gets freed from rubble.
At least that is the way they were in 2E-3.5, I honestly don't care to learn what 5e retconned for political reasons.
So as far as I know/care you did the right thing getting rid of them.
It would be different if those duegar would be on the surface, raiding, enslaving and pillaging a village or whatnot, but they are not, you help weak people asking for help, no good thing by helping them in the underdark, as soon your gone, those weak people will get obliterated anyways, weakness has no place in the underdark, and a little wannabe surface do gooder will not change that.
In Fallout (i think 2) I was helping some bigger settlement, until one day a child pickpocket me on the street. I only wanted to punish the kid, but his friends joined the battle, then everyone else joined, and it ended up in one very dead settlement. It didnt break the game, finished the story fine.
Then i still remember Arcanum. In one playthrough I was a bit wild half-orc. At one point, one of the quest givers for main plot (Gill Bates for those who played it) pissed me off, and it ended up in a rampage where i killed every single person in the biggest city I believe the game had (actually it was more of a self defense, they kept attacking me on sight). What was amazing that it also didnt brake the game, missed some quests, some were made shorter because I got the stuff I needed from the dead bodies ... but I finished the game just fine.
In BG2 and Planescape torment I think I also butchered whole or at least big parts of the main cities because they behaved really ugly to me, but I believe I realoaded after a bit more because it felt like I am missing too much of the content.
But I am sure one dark dwarf settlement wont be missed at all in your game :-). I also just reached them today, but left to have a rest and finished some other stuff ... but man I had a feeling something ugly is going to happen there when I get back :D
Sometimes good paladins do that when they come upon great evil.
There might be a good one out there but the chances of them living among their own people is likely close to 0 because by doing so every day they would be forced to be part of things that would go directly against what they wanted to be/believed in.
I woke up without any memory after having had my brain made love to by a squid. Perks are I have Jedi powers, down side is you will die in 7 days. Oh and then I was attacked by brains which I proceeded to bash to death. I met an evil witch who barked orders at me and a sleeping princess who she insisted we leave behind. It took every ounce of my strength not to bash her brains in next while we freed the girl who turned out to be an emo that just wanted to be friends. We somehow ended up in Hell, not figuratively, and I fell to my death only to be given whiplash by a last second save. Oh the ship we were on almost crashes onto my head.
Next I go ashore and meet some people attempting to break into a tomb. Naturally they tried to kill me. Then I meet a pale skinned elf. Who also tried to kill me. Then I meet another man. Who later confides in me that he also could kill me at any time by exploding. I find some goblins trying to kill some people, and upon getting noticed they ALSO try to kill me. The people I save let me into their camp but it turns out to be full of devil people that want nothing to do with me. I thought the kids would be nicer. Nope, they stole my watch.
After that I was almost by killed by half a dozen other things so I decide to go to sleep.
The next day, I killed everyone in Faerun and was promoted to Unholy Assassin.
