Zhentarim Hideout question

So, I've saved the two Zhentarim guys from the gnolls, and they told me the keyword to their hideout. I convinced them to sell the chest in baldurs gate. I stumbled into the hideout rather by coincidence, but once there, I found the two guys in trouble and was asked to complete the job and kill Rougan (?) for it. I'm torn about what to do. Doesn't quite suit me character to kill a tied up guy, but I actually didnt plan on taking on the whole gang.

Is there any consequence coming from me doing so?

did you open the chest? you can place the whole chest unopened into you inventory and carry it there, if you don't want them to get killed.

or if you release him, you'll have to kill him in the goblin camp I believe

If it makes you feel better, the whole gang is pretty evil/devoid of morality. Zhentarim are jerks. On my main/good run I took the cargo and then saved Rougan after killing the rest of em.

Hey got an great idea, steal the item out of the chest an lock it with a spell again, would really like to know what happens, or open it look into it and leave everything in, lock it with a spell, if anyone has a save to try this, please post what happens if you do so.

you have to destroy the chair on which he is sitting, if you free him directly he brandishes his weapon and disappears with a -5 on relationship

I've no idea to be true, maybe you can find him again in baldurs gate, but I believe I killed him in the goblin camp afterwards

Okay no it was a different guy who I killed at the goblins, but thx to you I found another passageway, there are so many nooks and crannies in this game :D

did you manage to deliver the chest to anyone in Baldur's Gate? When i did it the person says theyre giving me something as thanks but i dont get anything.

im hoping its a bug and they didnt just forget to add a reward in case you remembered to do it, given that theres no to deliver it its just in the finish text of the quest
