For clearing the square outside once they turned hostile i use the 3 Ogre's you can hire in the Blighted village and come back there from the outside.
That said, coming back to that square from the outside i didn't even need them on a replay. Often position can control how many you have to deal with a once, and area effect spells can do some more. Coming out the fortress door there is too many all at once, but maybe when you have the 3 Ogre horn you can get away with even that.
I take it the option to use 3 ogre's to help you is actually designed to clear that Goblin square early on when your spells are still limited.
Second attempt: exit through the destroyed wall at the top of the stronghold (I guess you need to have cleared it from the outside first though), sneak attack all the sleeping goblins up there, block the holes with crates/barrels. Start stealth-sniping the first enemies around the fast-travel gate (killed 4 of them without starting the actual battle, although it took a bit of F5-F8) and the Warlock overlooking the courtyard, start the fight, bombard everything from the vantage point. Some of them got through holes I missed, the ogre tried throwing a rock at me once, but basically no one in the courtyard can hit you. A hobgoblin ran around and tried to climb vines to reach me (nothing you can really do about that) but died before he reached melee range.
Sanctuary is a interesting skill to use to make a caster totally invincible to run around collecting or moving things and dropping things, you can get hurt from AoE but never targeted directly.
This means you can 'drop' items that are flammable or explode and make another character shoot or throw it.
There is a lever to bypass that puzzle entirely :-)
You just need a character with high detection to notice it and high lock picking ( dexterity ) to activate it.
That said, i play in storytelling mode in a first play through and then the puzzle can be solved in under two minutes as well : just move all the dark moons to the bottom circle.
I don't know if in more difficult settings the lever is missing or the puzzle has the half moons as in the beta. But even that i could solve myself, just took longer :-))
I didn't find out you could just click on waypoints on the map to instantly travel there untill much later, so I ended up spending about an hour sneaking back out
Anyway, not that hard when you think about it or try the obvious possibilities of arrangement - following a clear pattern.
Harder enemies are on the wall and are sleeping, so don't get up,
I only had a hard time getting up on the wall, because they snipe you from above and their height advantage makes everything far far harder.
The fight against the remaining goblins is pretty easy (at level 4, balanced difficulty) when you attack the front gate. The bridge as a natural choke point helps a lot so you can CC effectively (e.g. cast web/grease). Using ranged weapons, you can also kite them pretty good and simply take out one after another.
