Is there a downside to frequent long resting?
Been playing for some 25 hours, still in act 1, currently in underdark, only rested once.

Asking because I don't want to skip something accidentally.

PoE taught me to save camping supplies.

Pathfinder taught me there is a timer for everything.
Early 2000s games taught me there are events that happen only once a year (hello, obelisk game in M&M).

Now I realized I skipped on many tadpole interactions because I wasn't sleeping enough. (1 dice roll for brainfokkery per long rest).

Did I eff up?

There are quite a few threads already asking this. You could have used the search feature to get your answer quickly.

The short answer is that yes, some things change when you long rest, the most common thing you'd miss is that various quests will 'progress' without you. Typically this only happens if you actually got close to the location before the long rest.

Examples just from the very early part of the game (to avoid anything to spoilery) include:
- If you get near where Lae'zel is in a cage but haven't rescued her (or killed her) before long resting, she won't be there anymore. (she'll still be somewhere else though)
- If you get near where a child on the beach is being lured by harpies but long rest before rescuing them, they will die.
- If you get near the Owlbear and her chick but do nothing there, and then get near the goblin camp and long rest, the Owlbear will have been killed by the goblins and her chick taken by them.

That's just 3 examples, there's a million more.

There are other things that only progress when you long rest as well though, where you would want to long rest. So, ultimately, I'd say rest when you need to and don't worry about.

Nothing "breaks" by long resting often, and unless you are going to play with a game guide next to you ♥♥♥♥ is gonna change sometimes, just roll with it, enjoy the game, and don't worry about it.

Thanks for the answer. I did search for some answers now and it seems apart from illithid powers I didn't miss on anything. Will sleep more frequently, I guess.

Unrelated kinda, as for illithid powers, each companion and you can use them once per rest. Do they stack together for the purposes of unlocking powers quicker or does it have to be you doing it? That would let me shave some rests. :P

I actually have no idea, I have been avoiding using illithid powers and not using the tadpoles either.

there was 2 quests ive found affected by long resting, as in affected the outcome, it seems to give ashort cutscene giving a sense of urgency of the quest

what i like about D2OS and now BG3 is the multiverse theory is somewhat at play here. you didn't or did do one thing? well it's happening the opposite in another.

very cool.

I take long rests whenever the spellcasters need to replenish spell slots.
Usually after every larger fight and before every large fight.

What I found nice by not resting is the hill giant strength potion economy. :)

21 strength forever.

The main downside is that you can run low on camp supplies. There's only one quest that's timed to long rest. Actually, I think it's worse to long rest too little, since you might miss interactions.
