Strength or Dexterity are your melee stats depending on the weapon. If has the Finesse trait then you can use strength or dexterity, otherwise it's just strength.

Str modifier is used as part of your melee attack roll most of the time. A war domain cleric that intends to melee often should have decent strength. I'd say 14 minimum, but I suggest 16 str and wis for a melee focused cleric.

.. That's because the other characters are using strength or dex to increase their attack rolls.. If you want to play a holy martial character, play a paladin.

Two options you got

Respec for strength at the cost of your spell casting ability, this means that your character would probably want to save their spells for simple buff and auto-success/auto-fail spells (Example: Shield of faith, healing words, bless)

Get Magic initiate and grab sheilelagh and use a staff or club like weapon: Sheilelagh lets you attack with your wisdom stats, at the cost of one feat you do not affect you spell casting modifier

But to be honest? Clerics have far better melee method, inflict wounds is one of their best melee option available at 3d10 necrotic damage, they are even crazier if you manage to have a wizard cast hold person and you land a critical hit on enemies.

All in all cleric's melee weapon is more of a last resort most of the time, you can choose to be good at one thing or bad at two things when your level is capped at 12, and I only really kit my cleric with weapons that provides passive buffs.

No, if you're looking for a caster to do that.. Go Warlock and at level 3, they get pact of the blade which allows them to use their caster stat (cha) for melee rolls.. They also get extra attacks with the same progression as martial classes like that.
If you want a holy esque melee class, go Paladin. Melee has always been a last resort for clerics, when even their cantrips will do more damage the majority of the time.
Unfortunately the one melee cantrip that is massively popular in 5e, booming blade, doesn't exist in BG3 as of yet.

Why does war cleric even exist then if paladin does?

Because paladin can't heal in group, and war cleric can, paladin can't summon spectral weapon but cleric can

... Because they are not comparable? War Cleric gives access to heavy armor, more weapon options, and certain conditions to dramatically boost your attack bonus and more attacks when you need it. You're still a cleric though, and you're not going to out do a martial class like a Paladin.. On the flip side, a Paladin is never going to out do you in spell casting.

The proficiency bonus alone is already +2 (plus another +1 fir every 4 character levels). So to end up with a+2 hit bonus you'd either have no proficiency with your weapon or 0 bonus from stats. Don't expect to do well in combat if your character doesn't have the stats for it.

why go war cleric over life cleric who can also wear heavy armour? if melee is just bad on a cleric.
