Edit: BTW you cannot save slaves that way (if he dies by himself), because those gnomes take them and you lose some moontower quest to find one of their friends as missing additional char in your camp
I just reloaded an older save and checked, but there is no warning message popping up at all for me. There's also one singular NPC named "skickpit" that will pop up from the void when you interact with the elevator gate to talk to you and then just disappears again. It's also kind of essential to go to camp at that point if you don't have shadowheart in you party, as it seems like this area is relevant to her story and she has actual dialogue there. I just can't believe that any of this would be intentional...
To make sure I wasn't affected by the "leaving the level kills Nere" thing that Hanzo mentioned, which does seem intentional, I've gone back to a save right before entering, taken the shortest possible path to beating Nere without resting or exiting the area at all, and I literally have quicksaves before fighting him (where everything is fine) and immediately after fighting him (where the entire map is totally empty - no NPCs, no enemies, no nothing).
It's bugged. But you might be able to avoid it by reloading a save from before you enter the area, and making sure not to leave. That wasn't enough for me, I've done it three times and still affected, but maybe it might work for you.
I know it was briefly discussed at the beginning of the game, but it is easily forgotten.
I didn't even get to Nere, I was still pretty much at the beginning of the map when they disappeared, just interacted with some slavers. Nere was the only named NPC I found whose corpse was still lying around the place without context after everyone was gone so I could still take his head, but it doesn't feel right. No warnings, no mention of what happened, just nothing
I didn't think it was realistic for Nere to be stuck in that cave for a week while I explored and I guess Larian didn't either.
When you get to Grymforge - you can teleport out of Gyrmforge to your camp exactly twice before Nere dies to the poison.
I reloaded - used cantrips to defeat everything I wanted in Gyrmforge, then confronted the dwarves - then freed Nere - then went into the underground forge chamber.
You have two long rests to complete the Nere section before he dies. You can't save the gnomes unless you do it in that time frame.
After a while everyone was gone from Grymforge for me as well. I was with that because i could freely explore and loot everything.
But then shortly after down the stairs , At the cages you find multiple drows and one off the druigers says nere is death , but neither has he's clothing? Is this a bug?
It isnt a bug and is intentionial.
I went back to camp a couple times just to dye my clothes, and then all the npcs were gone. I didnt realize there were supposed to be npcs until hours later, so reverting to an old save would just waste too much time. I didn't take any long rests, and everyone left.
Even if it depended on long rests this would still be inconsistent and feels buggy. The forge is so confusing without any npcs.
