We had: Astarion as a Drow Ambusher (Ranger)
Karlac as a Wild Magic barbarian/ 2 levels into paladin for smite
Me as a Moon Druid
and my last friend as a Fighter.
Since me and Astarion had such a high initiative we could kill almost all the dream fighters and the Emperors turn one, we did some preperations like castings Heros Feast and different buffs from potions you can make. As far as the adds we seemed to get lucky and Zevlor did a great job of keeping the dragon busy though we did kill that too, having a Ranger nuke the adds made it much easier, might be worth trying if you're still having trouble?
I'm no expert in the game either, but what we did worked out. Might be worth mixing around your classes/armor?
Moon Druid though saved my ass a lot because shapeshifting gives you max health of the thing you shift into, i.e Sabertooth Tiger is like 98HP or so with my bonuses, and it's insanely fast.
Hope some of this helps, and good luck ^^
In my first turn I try to kill the sorc copy due of his constant spam of counter spell while I use the summonings to distract the other enemies. Then on the try I almost made it i splitted the party to the get on crown sorc and astarion on the right, shadow Karlach and emperor on the left while managing to keep 2 summonings left the gur and the guild thieves. But still the mind fosters wreck us because or they spam their better version of arcane missile or the air that stun, in fact the sorc was dead when I reached the top, in the meanwhile I used the scroll of invulnerability where the portal opens.
As consumables I’m using on the sorc the elexir that gives you +5 initiative plus a scroll of blur, on astarion a potion of fire resistance, shadowhearth potion of flying (she is the tankers one I gave her the heavy armor feats) and on kharlac the potion of cloud giant strength plus a scroll of mirror image.
The biggest issue so far are the mind flatters because with a single cast of missile they manage to kill one of the summoned npc.
It needs no strength but tactics to solve. I won yesterday with my Klerik Tav, Lae´zel, Karlach, Minsc and Orpheus (Transformed). Dont fight in the middle. I killed the Imperator, yes, but all my companions got scrolls of teleportations and stuff so they can reach the crone fast.
You need to kill all Squidwards on the higher ground. Those do the most damage with their magic, then you use the right spell onto the crown. If your own Squid is not attacked for 1-2 rounds, which is the goal ... it will open a portal. You need to get ALL of your Crew inside that portal as soon as possible. Thats why I´ve used me scrolls and abilities. After entering you enemies outside will not be able to follow you, you are safe! BUT you´ve got only 5 turns to beat the hell out of the elder brains source of power. Thats why you need everyone as soon as possible through the portal. Together you can beat it. Only the Squid is not enough.
Do it like this and it will be an easy, heroic win. ;)
dimension door and fly the boys to the control panel turn 1, or group invis(havent tried but it should work) and drop the level 6 immunity(cleric spell) for 3 turns bubble drop the channel while in the bubble and just walk in next turn and sorc blasts 1 or 2 of the illithid boys close to eliminate possible stuns.
we did it the hard way on tact and stayed back and summoned everything we had to buy time so we could kill the dragon 6 ghouls from the codex of thay , planear ally, 4 summons of friends about 12 dudes, spirit weapon, water elemental, imp and some other things was about 20-30 dudes summons and the comp had zero necro's was just sorc, karlach as a monk, warlock, cleric. sorc twin haste on her and the monk makes most fights a auto win for the most part and god forbid you had illithid powers. freecast makes it so you can spam lvl 6 spells it reads like it should only get 1 free cast per short or long rest but it resets every other turn so im like 99% sure its bugged.
honestly shouldn't have done monk, sorc first playthrough but to be fair i thought monk was going to be ♥♥♥♥ turns out its probably one of the best classes in the game and it was a no brainer sorc was going to be amazing.
Can it be countered by sorcerer copy? Because I have not completely understood if it can counter spell only 1 turn or all the time a spell is casted, because it does not use it when I use spells like misty steps but other times it used it while I was casting trivial spells like feather fall or when I use a scroll. Other instead does not use counterspell, like using emperor rallenty spell.
Just need to get the mindflayer, whoever it is in your playthrough, up there and control the crown for a turn with out dying then rush everyone through the portal. Enemies won't follow, so you just have the Netherbrain to contend with. Mindflayers near it are squishy enough that a hasted fighter can slaughter them on their own.
If you keep fighting, you lose anyways. You have countdown to enter the mind of the brain, and as it goes, it gets increasingly harder to get there.
So ...
Your easier path to only worry about the brain fight is to go by the sides to avoid the tentacles, divide the group in two to avoid the dragon to spit in all of you at once, and circle around through the "diadem" just CCing the enemies as much as possible, and making a stand while opening the portal to the mind of the brain.
Should you "stop and fight", the brain will keep calling reinforcements, sprouting tentacles, etc.
Once the portal is open, you can dish out on the brain, if the whole group was near when the portal opened, the whole group can be inside in a turn, and avoid fighting outside altogether.
Inside the brain it is "easier" and when you defeat the brain, it is over.
It is like the fight in the building. Should you delay, specially if you took the left path, you be swarmed.
So the easiest: Astarion has the invisibility ring and had a couple of invisibility potions. So from the High Hall I just took him exploring while invisible to find the route because I'm navigationally challenged. Encountered the statue, so remotely pickpocketed a potion of cloud giant strength from Lae'zel. Even then, it took two turns to knock it over so needed the two invis potions. Crossed the downed statue, healed up in the restoration pod, entered the portal, where all team members suddenly transported.
It looked really intimidating with all the mind flayers and a dragon and the emperor. But the main thing was to get Karlach the mind-flayer to the "crown" (which I couldn't even see but figured the location was somewhere about the middle behind the bad guys). So I spent no time on the bad guys except my sorlock Tavvy shot down the emperor on her rush to the crown. Got Astarion Tavvy and Karlach in there when it weakened and a portal opened and shot the Ab down in a turn. Meanwhile poor Lae'zel succumbed to spells and they concentrated on her outside, but she lived through it. I made Orpheus sanctuary himself because I didn't know monk abilities and didn't know if he'd be needed for something important.
No reload! No summons. Still took about an hour I think.
Alas, my romance with Astarion (who I made a fighter/rogue) has come to a great end, fulfilling all my Buffy and Spike fantasies from decades ago! Now when I start a new game and romance someone else, I'm going to feel unfaithful!
