I didn't test it, but I did notice they all had "rope" in their inventory when they died. I wonder if you steal that rope with invisibility before the battle it disables the garrote attack.
I'll have the try it next time.
only shadowheart got teleported away from my party and she can stand her own for a while as a cleric + it made the harpers that were waiting for me to do ambush on the cultist convoy engage in the battle with the meazels,
so we were suddenly 8 person party
If you have the HP to survive the opportunity attack you can run away and break the garrote allowing you to cast spells which I did with the cleric, but I realized that if you can successfully shove them you can run away without suffering the opportunity attack and hit them hard with magic.
Works every time for me
Maybe get Volos Eye by having yours poked out, so you can get a surprise round against them.
Spellcasters can use Shocking Grasp to walk out of Garrotting without AoOs, and then Misty step somewhere else, after which the Maezel will usually Shadow Stap before silencing you meaning it cant teleport you away.
Other than that all you can do is try to get a light cantrip of any kind onto all of your party.
YOu get a Dancing Light Necklace quite early, you can get a ring with Light on it from the Arcane Tower, Shadowheart/Clerics just get Light or Produce Flame.
Another thing you can attempt is trying to get them prone with ice because that usually also breaks any magic effect they could inflict on you.
I look around and see mobs.
I open fire on them.
Getting the initiative and dropping a couple right off the bat makes that fight so much simpler.
Course knowing they are there now for my 2nd and 3rd plays made it even easier to prepare.
There in an area where they can't really do anything to you unless you make the stupid decision to jump down in amongst them. Sit back and blast them with spells and ranged attacks while the funnel neatly into the natural corridor.
In this game you also get the ability to metagame by examining enemies to see what their weaknesses are. Drop a daylight spell, or even just light on someone and they basically can't do ♥♥♥♥.
Talk to the pixie in the lantern and release her. I know, seems like a stupid thing to do, because you need that lantern. But actually, she'll give you protection against the shadow curse.
You give up having a powerful light source, but what you gain is the tactical ability for your party members to go anywhere they want to on their own without a light source and without taking curse damage.
Tried it, no option for pickpocketing. FYI you can shove them off the roof if they missed the garroting.
