Haven't romanced anybody. Every one of them seems like a bad idea.
for all the romance parts i wait until they are high enough to trigger(because you dont have to press on it before and they wait), then i do it and then i load backup. so i play without romance stuff, because i play for storyquests and dont want to get locked out of something, because only some allow poly stuff(and i dont know who) and i dont know if romance can break storystuff for them. so better save then sorry.
Gale's story is pretty cool and has some really interesting development in Act 2 and Act 3, but otherwise he's pretty meh personality wise.
Astarion's story starts out pretty interesting and from what I can tell has a lot of potential in its climax, but journey between the beginning and the end is pretty forgettable and he probably has the least amount of content in Act 2. His personality does start off as kinda annoying, but by around Act 2/3 it actually really grew on me and started to love just how much of a pompous douche he was to others.
Lae'zel is a hard one for me. Her story brings you to interesting events and its nice to have a super pragmatic lawful evil character around, but honestly her own role in her story isn't that interesting and I never really felt invested in her character development. She kinda just stays in that blind loyalty phase for so long that it kinda wears out the plot point eventually.
Jahiera kinda starts out as a bit uninteresting, but once you start exploring Baldur's Gate with her she becomes really fun to have hanging around as you explore her connection to the city and the events in the previous game. I especially love it when you find the resurrected/ghostly form of Saverok and bring Jaheria along as they both start ♥♥♥♥ talking each other about the events of BG1.
I haven't recruited Minsc yet, but from the one scene I saw of him I feel like he's definitely going to become one of my favorite companions to have around due to his massive badass himbo energy.
