I hate him, he's annoying, and useless in combat to me. Rogues are bad in 5E. I see no need for them at all in any circumstance. Story wise he's nowhere near as interesting as the others.
BUT! Rogue aren't bad in 5e it's one of the most versatile, durable classes in the game and have the highest most consistent single target damage out put. ( No a paladin going nova isn't consistent it uses resources )
The class might not be suitable for you play style which is fair enough, but that doesn't make them bad :)
Karlach's is the most charismatic of all the companions and perfect for my Tiefling Bardlock.
I play in coop and those are the two we play with, primarily based on personality I guess since we're doubling up on barbarians.
I think that most of them would be fine, other than Gale but his initial dialogues with my characters based on class were infuriating and I'm tolerating him in my camp and that's it :)
