Is Boo in the game?
And if not, why? This is very important.

Was wondering the same. Clearly we're missing a reference to either DnD, or older BG games.

Minsc and Boo are basically the proto-assgrabbery CRPG characters, Joss Whedon and Russell T Davies would be proud. They're Baldur's Gate characters.

Boo is more a Baldur's Gate thing than a D&D thing. There are many people who are experienced D&D players that have never played any of the BG titles.
But giant space hamsters are definitely a thing in D&D

They are but not until after Baldurs Gate. I mean I suppose I could be wrong but I do not remember seeing any references to them in 2nd Ed, certainly not first

Giant Space Hamsters (a full two page writeup and SIXTEEN VARIANTS) first appeared in the Monstrous Compendium: Spelljammer Appendix in 1990, eight years before bg1 came out. They were large, muscular creatures the size of bears that were bred by gnomes to power their spelljammers (magic spaceships) by running in giant wheels.

I stand corrected

I am a HUGE Baldur's Gate / D&D /PF/etc nerd.

Here;'s A question then. You showed there were Giant Space hamsters before Baldurs Gate, but is Boo the first reference to a Giant Miniature Space Hamster?

It's a giant miniature space hamster that is Minsc's familiar that basically does nothing but provide comic relief along with Minsc. Boo is a gaming and D&D meme. Seem to recall there is lore for him in an actual D&D book. ME2&3 even refference him as an obtainable pet. I give points to bioware for actually using the *squeak* noise Boo used when you clicked on him in BG2. It was a nice touch that made me as an old school gamer giggle.

They're one of the variants introduced in the original entry. They're extremely intelligent and can even speak (in whispers) and they even possess short-range telepathy which they typically keep hidden.

There are also: Abominable Giant Space Hamsters, Armor-Plated, Carnivorous flying, invisible, ethereal, fire-breathing phase doppleganger, giant space hamster of ill open, great horned, rather wild, sabre-toothed, subterranean, sylvan, two-headed lernaean bombadier, tyrannohamsterus rex, and yellow musk
