There may be neo-pagans worshipping Selene today, but not her made up fantasy/FR counterpart that Greenwood named Selune.
I see nothing creepy in Selune's worshipping (In FR) what seems to be the problem?
Beware though... Deities might be an imaginary thing but religions are not. They are real and have real consequences in the real world, sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes both.
A high level caster with a charm spell and a few weak minded idiots can form a cult in a heartbeat, as seen by the absolute which is a similar approach just stronger magic via the tadpoles.

'Religions' are just cults that are recognized and most of them are even more dangerous then some janky backyard cult
The fact that they added them as an actual summonable ally at endgame if you command them to build you an army is beautiful. I did that my first run and was disappointed never seeing them again, but now it pays off, lol.
You can literally meet Lady Shar herself in this game...
