Failed to find the Tieflings in Moonrise tower???
I'm confused. I just arrived at Moonrise tower for the first time, and immediately upon reaching it I got the message that I failed to find the tieflings in Moonrise Tower.

How is this possible?

I did the Underdark, and the Shadowlands and the Gauntlet of Shar, and the Creche, and the monastery, and then the Nightsong, and then I went too Moonrise tower. What should I have done differently?

Should I do Moonrise before the Nightsong? I honestly am having trouble working out which quests to do in what order. It's really not that clear in the Journal.

This, you get a quest from moonrise that sends you to nightsong and before doing that you can rescue the tieflings.
Once you have freed or killed the Nightsong, infiltrating Moonrise is no longer an option. Every cultist now considers the place to be under attack. In particular, the prison area is now filled with nasty necromancers and their undead, which does not bode well for the prisoners.

Going to Shadowfell (to Nightsong) locks you onto a path to the finale of act 2 and ends all side-quests in the area. So, before triggering Shadowfell you should do any sidequests you want. If I remember right there is a pop up when you try to go to Shadowfell which is saying exactly that.

When you go into the Shadowfell, you get one of those "You are about to advance the game" popups. What that means is that, yes, you just closed out a lot of quests, including the one about the prisoners.

Hey, I get it. I did that myself the first time I played the game. Oh well.

The game rather expects you to explore Moonrise first.

Yeah, as long as you don't do the Shadowfell in the Gauntlet of Shar you can complete everything else. Shadowfell should be the last thing you do before attacking Moonrise tower.

It's an easy mistake to make though.

Most of the Tieflings and the Gnomes can be found in prison located in the basement of Moonrise Towers, but as the others said, you left that too late.

I mean, the game straight up tells you not to do it.
Larian wants to gobble up as much of our time as they possibly can...this is one of the ways that they do that. I started going after Nightsong long before I knew about Moonrise Towers.
A lot of people misinterpret that they should not go to moonrise towers prior to the gauntlet of shar. Untrue. As long you dont bother Ketheric, theres a lot of stuff to do and see at moonrise towers.
Halsin tells you to go to Moonrise. Jaheira tells you to go to Moonrise. Barcus tells you to go to Moonrise. The tieflings tell you to go to Moonrise. Isabel tells you to go to Moonrise. Florrick tells you to go to Moonrise. At the creche all the information points to Moonrise.

The game clearly intends for you to go to Moonrise, to see for yourself that Ketheric is invulnerable, and then to get tasked by Z'rell to go find the Nightsong.

However ... in my first playthrough, being "genre savvy", I decided to explore as much as possible before going to Moonrise, and that's how I ended up finding the Nightsong first and missing a lot of stuff.
