*** Minor spoiler ahead ***
If you want to save the Duke, go to the coronation first to advance the main story line. After that you can explore the city freely (including going to Felogyr's if you wish; that won't trigger the Duke death). Last thing, do the Steal Watch Foundry last.
Bad things happen if you don't.
I have never gone to the Coronation and have never had any issues not going there before killing Gortash. I destroy the Steel Watch Factory first and then of course this makes all of the guards and Gortash hostile where he is.
The only bad things that have happened is to Gortash and his guards. :)
If you don't consider that the Duke will die, Wyll will be pissed and then you need to have Mizora to help rez him.
The run I am doing now, Wyll is not even in the camp and no Mizora. I will miss out on the hit pt. buff from the Duke for the end game fight, but that is no big lost. As those get ate up before you even reach the Netherbrain.
Of course I have never did the Investigate the Suspicious Toys quest and you don't need to in order to get the pass to the Lower City. So this may be why I have not had any issues not going to the Coronation.
And I get the Coronation invitation from Gortash himself when he is talking to you thru a Steel Watcher.
Spoilers follow. Wont tag.
You can do the Foundry first, but if a motivator activates, it not only kills all Gondians in the Foundry, it will kill all the ones in the Iron Throne, and cause the Iron Throne to explode, killing Ravengard. So doing it first is "high risk".
It's generally a good idea to do Iron Throne first, as if you save Ofelia Toobin (and she's the easiest to save - heck she's down there outside a cell running for your sub as soon as you arrive) - and talk to her on the way out, Ofelia will give you the quest to talk to her papa Zanner (I always call him Zoomin Toobin) and free the Foundry workers, which is worth additional XP.
Also, yes, Mizora will tell Wyll after the coronation that his father's dead. She's lying and IMHO also knows she's lying. Because, of course, she will then offer to have Wyll re-enter the contract and then she'll tell him that yes the Duke is alive and is in the Iron Throne and at least in that scenario won't interfere with rescuing him. Of course, meta knowledge or a playthrough will reveal to the player they have no need to have Wyll re-enter his contract with Mizora to rescue his pop the Duke.
I always do the Iron Throne first. Then the Steel Watch Factory. And the Motivators can be deactivated if done so in time. But that is a good tip for the best sequences of the quests.
Mizora will offer the same type deal on rezzing Wyll's father even after he is dead from your attacks on him. She is not lying then.
Oh yeah, I definitely messed up that sequence lol. I was hoping I could prevent that Gortash scumbag from being crowned, so I didn't go to the coronation right away. I explored the city, ended up in the Iron Throne, disabled the Steel Watch, and now that I went to the coronation, everything that breathes is hostile, including the Duke, which I suppose means I'm forced to kill him. Guess that ship has sailed.
The journal updating with Ravengard's death does seem to be a bug though. On my way to face Gortash I said hi to Mizora and she talked as if the duke was dead, and what do you know, the journal also listed him as dead. So I reload, and bam, Duke's not dead anymore and Mizora just says hello.
Odd.
