Which level should I be? (spoilers for act 2)
I was level 5 when I started act 2. I entered the shadowlands via the cave in the goblin camp, had a fight with the shadows, went to the last light inn. Also did a few sidequest.

Still level 5, I went to the village that containts the quest marker for entrance to moonlight towers. I collected the infernal iron there. I moved on but got totally wrecked by a few corrupted harpers and (mostly) the shadows, so I guess I am quite a bit underlevelled. I explored a bit further and was able to defeat the toll collector with some persusion, which put me over to level 6.

What level should I be to proceed to the moonlight towers?

Problem also seems to be that there are not a lot of quests left on the map, as far as I can see. I went to the quest marker for the creche, but that means I have to travel to the mountain pass. Ofcourse I can do that to farm some XP, but I don't really get why the games designers gives you the choice or one path over the other if you have to take them both anyway to farm some XP.

for moonrise itself, 7 or 8 going at 6 youll be severely under powered. i would recommend going to both the underdark and the mountain pass before doing anything else at moonrise

to further answer your question, there are multiple different route for multiple different quest lines, the mountain pass serves only to progress leazels story and to give you more xp, but i would recommend going to the under dark first its a bit easier to manage, theres a few quest in there too that will help plus it takes you to the grymforge which gives you loot loot

I think I hit level 6 or 7 I'll need to check my bard when I entered the shadow land. I did all the quests in the underdark bar one which I'll double back to and did all the quests in the previous section beyond the Nightsong - which I think continues into the shadow lands.

Agreed with Ghostkeal, you're probably under-leveled for act 2. Not impossible, but that will be hard for you especially if you're on your first run. I'm usually level 7-8 when entering the shadows.
Also in the creche zone, there"s a quest artifact that is just great for fighting undeads in act 2 (typically, i give that to Shadowheart who's central in act 2)

That is strange, since I did most of the side quests I encountered in act I. I already went through the underdark, also did most (if not all) of the quest there. I also fought the slave trading elf (forgot his name) for example.

So seems like I have no choice but to go to the mountain pass and hope I can level up once or twice before moving on.

Love the game, but got to say that I think this is just bad design. If you have to go look for side quest (and even go back) because otherwise you are underpowered, something went wrong.

Mountain pass was super cool, so I wouldn't skip it especially with Lae Zel as a party member

Level 5 is fine.

I must agree on this. You have indications that you should choose between the two paths when it's way better to do both, Put the blame on Halsin =)

I'm a little half way through Act 2 and just dinged level 8.

-You might of missed a few quests in Act 1.
-Do all the Underdark
-Do all the Mountain overpass
-Act 2 - Do all the little quests before entering Mausoleum/Shar Temple.

You should have 6 to 7 levels at the end of act 1. Maximum experience is level 7 plus half way thru to level 8.

For end of act 2, you should be level 11 with level 12 likely possible. Level 12 is the maximum.

This is, frankly, ridiculous advice. I'm not even sure how it could be done in an unmodded game.

I usually turn level 10 shortly before the final boss fight of Act 2, and that's enough to easily power through that fight on Honor Mode. I think anywhere from level 8-10 is what the game is expecting for that fight.

you are probably a level early at 5th. I usually leave act 1 at 6th and after the creche, a good chunk toward 7th. I do both underdark and creche though.

5th is a big level, 2nd attacks or double damage cantrips for most characters. 6th can be pretty important too, fighter (feat), bard (2nd attack), monk (wis damage), and others get some good things there. The fights should be doable at 5th but you will need more spells than usual.

Often its not the leveling that is the problem. To walk out of act 1 at 5th means you missed a lot, and that means you maybe didn't get some gear too... combine lower health and lesser gear and its a recipe for getting beat up.

This strikes me as very strange. Doing most of the Underdark and a lot of the surface Act 1 content should get you past level 5, easily. I'm thinking that you must have missed a lot of stuff.

Things that can be easily missed in Act 1:

Harpy encounter.
Hag swamp. (I missed it completely in my fist playthrough)
Spider area.
Zhent hideout. (The gnolls are hard to miss, but that won't always point you to the hideout.)
Ogres in the Blighted Village. (I missed them in my first playthrough)
Shovel's area.
Tollhouse basement.

Maybe even Karlach and the whole Tollhouse area.

The Kua-Toa cove can be REALLY easily missed, but it's more like an Easter egg area, so I'm not sure that counts. I missed it in my first *several* playthroughs.

If you follow Halsin's advice and go straight to the Underdark via the Goblin Camp, you might even miss the entire Risen Road area.

In my first playthrough I entirely missed the Mountain Pass until I was about to enter the Shadowfell. Lae'zel then threatened to leave my party if we didn't go to the creche first, so I turned around and went back and found the creche.

I hit level 12 very early in Act 3. Just couple of quests in Revington and bang, done, no mods. You need to consider I was solid level 7 at the end of Act 1 and I missed nothing on your post above. I did Act 2 like Act 1, carefully exploring everything and turning every stones. That a consequence of spending 959 hours in a single playthough ;-)
