Cull The Weak
So ... when i first started playing this game, I read the description of Cull The Weak and it didn't sound like it was worth a tadpole to use. It took me a LONG time to find out otherwise, but it is an amazing power if you commit to it.

I wondered if there was any special acknowledgement if you filled in *every* tadpole spot on someone, and as far as I can tell there is not. But ... it turns Cull The Weak into a monster. You only have to lower somebody to about 25 HP and the instantly die. Not only do they die, but they also burst damage any enemies nearby.

I avoided using this for so long, and instead it turns out to be one of the most potent tadpole powers if you fully commit to it.

Cull the Weak + Black hole + any AoE = GG scrubs.

Throw your Tav/Dark Urge into the Zaithisk so that you can use Blackhole as a Bonus action.

The active mindflayer abilities really don't get great until Tier 3 but it is many of the passives like this one which are really the best in Tier 1 and Tier 2. Some are really best only for Tav/the main "face" of the party like Illithid Persuasion.

Just one key thing to remember, if you WANT to KO someone (I usually do at least two times), make sure you enable nonlethal damage and DEACTIVATE this passive.

This right there. Illithid powers as a bonus action are so much more powerful in practice.

Yep... Major power, that one. Chain reaction is overkill :)

I forgot to turn off this passive when doing the Balduran trial to find the traitor which caused all three Illusions to die. Nearly killed my character 💀.

It is extremely powerful. The problem is the wording. It makes it sound like it harms allies as well as enemies but it's only enemies.

Yeah, I've made that mistake. Not that exact one, but I hit the correct one with something with splash damage which affected the two next to it. Which was counted as failing the trial.

And then, yep, found out the real fun of these trials if you make a mistake, even an unintentional one: you can still finish them and the Wyrmway, but you will be constantly fighting hordes of undead until you get to the final chamber. (And when I made that mistake, I didn't have SH or a bloody cleric with me.)

I love this ability, but my big complaint with it is that it doesn't activate things that are meant to happen on kill. For some reason, if Cull the Weak is responsible for killing an enemy, it doesn't count it for the triggering character, which matters for anything that relies on that trigger.

Was gonna ask this. I've avoided this power because I didn't wanna aggro npcs, or damage allies. Awesome.

Yes, that was why I avoided it for so long too. But it turns out that the wording is misleading, and it's actually completely party/ally safe.

When it works it is great. Many damage procs from items or skills/passives do not trigger it.

It works from spell attacks, weapon attacks, throw attacks and throwing the enemy itself onto the ground. How "many" are we talking about here?

Dunno. Didn't play for some time. Mostly it's items that add bonus(usually 1d4 or flat 2) damage. It's been forever that Cull of the Weak is not procing on everything.
