Halsin Portal fight
rant incoming

I HATE this fight. i play the game without save scumming unless something goofy happens and turns everything into a cluster♥♥♥♥, but i hate how the game throws you into a gimmick fight without telling ANYTHING about it. I tell halsin on my oath of the ancients that i'm gonna defend him, and he doesn't even tell me what is gonna happen so i can prepare for it.

In my second try i easily won by changing one gale's spell for darkness and using sanctuary on him so i made him impervious to damage. Shadowheart then used her turn undead while laezel and my paladin blocked everyone who passed. Simple, clean, but having reloaded it feels like a hollow victory.

Why would he even know what's going to happen when it's physically an Ambush fight without Surprise mechanic? He just knows you're going to be attacked, not that it's going to be a massive horde.

If you're so against Save Scumming, shoulda just suffered the consequences of losing Halsin and Thanelle to the Shadow Curse. Your victory feels hollow cause you took the hypocrite way out.

this is one of several fights where 'spike growth' is an i-win button. Also for the fight with the boy in the same series, for a second. Following up, a cloud of daggers right in front of the portal will cap the birds that ignored the spikes.

You’re a slow one, aren’t you? The problem is not that is a massive horde. The problem is that it is a defend the portal and he enters the portal right after the dialogue and you are attacked. I simple “I need time to prepare” option would have sufficed.

He didn’t know I would have to defend the portal? Haha that’s the entire point. “Defend the portal while I’m gone. Tell me when you’re ready” was this hard to do?

So? There are fights in the game which if you have not did them before or checked for tips on the fights, you can get your ass kicked.

Just part of the game. Nothing to get upset about.

You do know you can swap characters mid-converaation, yes? Don't need to tell him hold on I gotta prepare when you can move around the other three while chatting... You can always prepare no matter the conversation.

And Halsin does tell you to defend the portal. Pay attention next time.

With 1 HP even crap stuff like alchemist fire will slaughter the crows. Magic missile too.

You don´t NEED barrelmancy in either flank of the fight but if you are lazy, use it on the right.

funny to tell other people to pay attention while you are seemingly unable to read.

Survival horror games are the WORST for this, hey.

So um... Halsin tells you EXACTLY what to do... Defend the portal. The game shows you that you have to defend it for 12 rounds (or something, can't remember the exact number) with the whopping big turn counter on the screen. It's exciting times and easy to miss, or misunderstand.

The first time you try it's a clesterfeck and then you do it a second time and win. Hopefully. If you're the sort to learn from mistakes, that is.

Once you figure it out, it's easy-ish (I don't cheese).

I keep Shart on the platform by the portal with spirit guardians on. That takes care of just about everything that gets close to the portal, It lasts for 10 turns and it usually takes 2 turns to get her into position there. It works well, particularly on the birds and shadow ghosty things. I have Gale or myself on crowd control to stop everything from moving too much. I have Astarion or myself taking out the archers at range and I have Karlach bashing anything that makes it anywhere close to the platform.

Once again, the problem is that he jumps on the portal immediately afterwards the dialogue and gives no time to prepare.

So? MOST fights you do in the game don't give you time to prepare. How is this one any different?

If only there were some markers and/or quest log detailing important objectives and their locations to give you some indication of if it might be a good idea to prepare for fisticuffs, especially for quests without any fore.. shadowing :cat_cool:.
