See if he can whitelist the BG3 launcher and/or executable. Running it as admin might also work.
Edit: As other commenters have pointed out, this isn't entirely accurate. To be clear, your buddy should be looking in whatever Anti-Virus software he is using, double check its firewall's network settings, and whitelist BG3's exe just in case. The exe likely isn't actually "uninstalled," just quarantined, which he can also reverse in that same program.
Well, in this case it is both (probably the same program, though). If it was just an anti-virus problem, the exe would get blocked when they tried to launch it, not when trying to connect to a multiplayer lobby.
steam will uninstall games in weird ways if your disk is full, as another thing it could be.
I think we might just be arguing semantics--the difference between a firewall module and a dedicated firewall program--but I can see my original comment could use some clarification so I'll add in an edit.
