I'm sure there's more, but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. All of them have a trigger you have to witness to start the timer, but if you sleep too many times after that, they resolve themselves.
You do realize you can just skip the grove, do a bunch of long rests and then come to it having never seen it, heard about it, etc and have it be closed off right? And nothing in the game, depending on how you play, will tell you "hey go to the grove or else it's closed off"
Edit: Hmmmm must've been changed since it once happened to me in EA...interesting
Now, I guess to be fair, if you're a noob and never went into the Grove before it gets sealed, you might not know they're about to do this thing they keep talking about called the Rite of Thorns. Or that going through the Pass will complete it.
And while I agree the generic warning you get when going through the Mountain Pass doesn't SPECIFICALLY say "the Grove is about to be sealed" the warning you get is pretty stark about the consequences of going through the Pass if you don't complete certain quests beforehand.
Stop the cap. The chances of this possibility being what happened is so abysmally small it might as well be impossible.
So you're telling me to believe OP started the fight for the Grove Gates, saw how important this place must be to have voiced cutscenes and people screaming for their lives, fighting, and trying to keep a place hidden and just went, "Nah, I'll go somewhere else"? The actions you'd need to take to even skip the Grove fight isn't something a new person would just come up with outta the ether unless they know game mechanics, the fight, and classes to pick beforehand.
After the fight at the Grove gate, the gate stays closed unless you walk right up to it, and it's not obvious where it is, or really that you NEED to go in. You can also elsewhere and camp a bunch of times before you get there. Not sure how all that triggers, tho. Is it long rests after the fight at the gate, or total in the game?
EDIT: sorry, there are three other possible triggers. All listed here.
https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Rite_of_Thorns_(ritual)
"Total number of LRs" isn't one of them.
I will note one of the Wiki footnotes says through use of Fly spell, you can still get into the Grove, even when the Rite has sealed it. Probably an exploit.
No amount of long rests will close off the Grove. What will close off the Grove is entering the Mountain Pass or Act 2 areas. And those do give you a "you are about to advance your game and may close off some unfinished business" popup.
Some people like to explore as much map as possible before interacting with things, and it is potentially possible that someone could work their way around to the Mountain Pass without ever going into the Grove or finding out about the associated quests. However, they would *have* to pass through the popup that says "you are about to advance your game".
You must've not read my edit, I've only ever had it happen once when I was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around in EA before release and I just skipped the grove and did other stuff, and since I couldn't leave for Act 2, obviously couldn't make those triggers but regardless, it happened, must've been fixed and/or changed from EA to release, which is fine
Why would you even reference a “problem” only you ever encountered, during Early Access, when this conversation is about the game as it stands now?
Do you really think it would have any relevance at all? All you did was muddy the waters with useless information, further confusing anyone talking about OP’s issue.
Because
1. I never played like that again
2. Not unreasonable to assume that Larian left in such a "mechanic" considering how detailed everything else is
3. I don't pore over the patch notes each update
4. Considering how "time" works in the game, yeah, it'd make sense for the grove to close after a certain amount of long rests anyways since closing the grove doesn't hard lock the main quests
But if you want to act all high and mighty, by all means, continue. I made the edit in my original comment, if that's not enough for you, it seems like nothing will
