Watch out when travelling with bears
Take a breath, this isn't what you think.

Hanging around with bears may break storylines. Specifically with a ranger pet, but probably shapeshifters too, NPCs may unexpectedly freak out and leave forever.

I've seen this happen twice now, once when I loosed a certain individual from a windmill, and a second time after rescuing an animal friend from goblin abusers, as soon as the NPC in question was released from a previous story state (bound or captive, respectively), they ran away and never came back, apparently because of the ranger pet bear.

I don't think this is a bug. People have very intentional reactions to other beasts, like birds and spiders and whatnot. But bears seem to dial the terror up to 11 for whatever reason.

Just a word to the wise!

I love the reactions NPC's have to spiders

Bears, like all other species in DnD, are inferior to humans. Only half-elves come close to their greatness. Unfortunately, they were not blessed with a +10 weight capacity to showcase their half-human blood, as Lurrrian doesn't favor them.

I mean... most people are rightfully freaked out when a 300kg ball of muscle with big ass claws that can run faster than the fastest sprinters is near them.

Oh, totally, very reasonable behavior indeed! But as someone who hates having to reload because of a game mechanic I didn't at all anticipate, I thought folks might want to know NPCs may have an appropriate reaction to standing next to a thing could spend less energy killing them than sneezing.

They can climb trees too and they eat dead things. So the usual escape methods don't work on them. I'd love to watch someone try the scare them away tactic. I would need an umbrella for the splatter.
