Does monk make armor and weapons obsolete?

I kind of like finding cool new items and armor, but i really like how the monk looks. Will monk remove that for me?

Not until VERY late game (in table top). A monk's unarmed damage starts at 1d4 then increases to 1d6 at 5th level, 1d8 at 11th level, and finally 1d10 at 17th level. So until then level 17, a staff (wielded in both hands) will deal as much or more damage than a punch and has the added benefit of possibly being a magic weapon with +1 or better to hit and damage.

NTM, if humans have proficiency with polearms, a human monk can use a glaive or halberd.

Can use, yes. But they wouldn't be able to benefit from it as monk weapon because it has the heavy property and both are explicitly two handed (As opposed to versatile) and as a result would not be able to use their martial arts feature to follow the attack with an unarmed strike as a bonus action nor would they be able to use dex for the glaive/halberd attack. This rule seems to be being followed by Larian because they state in community update #20 "Monk weapons are neither heavy nor two-handed, with this class opting instead for lighter fare like clubs and quarterstaves - or forgoing weapons altogether in favour of a classic knuckle sandwich, punches that scale up in damage as they level." And this is stated BEFORE they go on to talk about the house-ruling they did, so likely sticking to RAW for that at least.

So let me say that I saw it on a creator video. Perhaps fextralife? But honestly I've seen a lot of BG3 videos in the last few days.

Mostly correct (in the PHB monk weapons are spelled out as short swords and simple weapons that are not twohanded or heavy. This working allows for martial weapons as well. But the point is that by indicating that Larain included that line in their community update before talking about their house-ruling it would imply that Larian is following that rule.

And no footage of a greatsword in use. Fextralife does a lot of coverage and they certainly do get things wrong from time to time. Monk weapon rules are often the subject of arguments amongst dedicated d&d groups, so it wouldn't be shocking for a general game coverage group/outlet like them to make a simple mistake and give an incorrect example.

Well, of course it could be wrong. But mark my words, Larian put in a lot of homebrew around multiclassing and we won't know the full extent of it for a couple weeks. I expect it will be the next big controversy.

A long sword is neither 'heavy' nor 'two-handed' (even when wielded in two hands as a versatile weapon - the two-handed and versatile weapon properties are separate and distinct) so a long sword should be a valid choice as a monk weapon in BG3.

Monks really aren't anywhere near as bad as the chronically online make it out to be. Even if Larian JUST went with the original PHB with no other changes, monks would still be useful in a party and some people would even still solo the game with one.

Also, Larian PR could have used the PHB quote not realizing what the gameplay guys had changed just as well as fextralife being wrong.

No way for us to know which at this point.
